N 165 to N 185th

Traffic shift and lane restriping on Aurora (night work)
On Monday and Tuesday nights, crews will stripe new lanes on Aurora between N 165th and N 175th Streets. Traffic will be shifted east on Aurora by Wednesday morning and construction will begin on the west side of Aurora. This will be very similar to how the temporary traffic lanes were established at the beginning of the project. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction. Please drive carefully and pay attention to signage indicating where vehicles are and are not allowed to turn.

Construction beginning on the west side of Aurora between N 165th and N 175th
After traffic is shifted east, crews will set up a work zone to begin roadway excavation on the west side of Aurora. Construction on the west side of Aurora will look very similar to construction on the east side, including such improvements as underground utilities and new sidewalks and driveways. Construction will generally begin at the south end of the project area, near N 165th Street, and proceed north. Asphalt removal and roadway excavation is expected to begin late this week.

Completing driveway and sidewalk construction on the east side of Aurora between N 165th and N 175th
On Monday and Tuesday, crews will complete work on driveway entrances, sidewalks and bus pads between N 165th and N 175th Streets.

Excavation and grading on Midvale Avenue and the Interurban Trail
Next week, crews will excavate and grade Midvale Avenue and the Interurban Trail, north of N 175th Street. A single lane closure will be necessary on Midvale during the day to provide enough room to complete this work.

Joint utility trench (JUT) installation along N 185th Street
Crews will install the JUT along the south side of N 185th Street, east of Aurora. Traffic lanes will be reduced to one westbound lane on N 185th Street on both sides of Aurora to provide enough room for this work.

JUT installation, grading and curbs on N 175th Street
Crews will continue installing the JUT along N 175th Street, east of Aurora. Late this week, excavation and grading behind the existing curb on the north side of N 175th Street will begin in preparation for pouring new curbs. While lane excavation is not necessary at this time, a single westbound lane of N 175th Street will be closed between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to provide enough room to complete this work.

Light pole installation
Light pole installation between N 175th and N 185th Streets will occur this week.

Aurora Corridor N 165th to N 185th, week of July 11

Sunday, July 11, 2010

Paving Tuesday, Wednesday nights; single northbound lane closure on Aurora
This Tuesday and Wednesday nights, crews will lay the base layers of asphalt in the construction work zone along the east side of Aurora between N 175th and N 185th Streets. Asphalt requires time to cool, so conducting this work at night will help maintain access to businesses and side streets, including N 182nd and N 184th Streets, during the day.

A single northbound lane on Aurora will be closed at night to provide enough room to safely complete this base paving. The work zone will not be open to general traffic or pedestrians. Work is expected to begin around 8:00 p.m. and continue until approximately 6:00 a.m.

Joint utility trench (JUT) installation along N 175th
Crews will continue installing the JUT along N 175th Street east of Aurora. A single westbound lane of N 175th Street will be closed during the day between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to provide enough room to complete this work. JUT installation at this location is expected to take another week or two to complete.

Completing majority of concrete work N 165th to N 175th
Crews are completing concrete driveway entrances, sidewalks and bus pads between N 165th and N 175th Streets this week. Asphalt paving behind driveway entrances will occur at night on Thursday. This work is occurring at night to minimize impacts to businesses, as access may be limited. Flaggers will help direct traffic in and out of businesses.

Traffic shift between N 165th and N 175th – week of July 19
To provide enough room on the west side of Aurora to begin construction, traffic on Aurora needs to be shifted to the east. This will be very similar to how the temporary traffic lanes were established at the beginning of the project.

Crews are planning to begin temporary lane striping on Aurora between 165th and N 175th Streets at night on Monday, July 19. Some daytime prep work will occur on Tuesday, July 20, including asphalt grinding. Flaggers will help direct traffic in and out of businesses during this work.

Construction on west side of Aurora N 165th to N 175th
After traffic is shifted east, crews will set up a work zone to begin roadway excavation on the west side of Aurora. Construction on the west side of Aurora will look very similar to construction on the east side, including such improvements as underground utilities and new sidewalks and driveways. Stay tuned for more information.

Vault installation at N 185th
Vault installation will continue on the corner of N 185th Street and Aurora. Traffic lanes will be reduced to one westbound lane on N 185th Street to provide enough room for this work. After the vault is installed, crews will begin digging the JUT along the south side of N 185th Street, east of Aurora.

Light pole installation
Light pole installation between N 175th and N 185th Streets will occur this week.

Aurora Corridor: Construction update week of July 4

Monday, July 5, 2010

No construction on July 5
Construction will not occur on Monday (7/5) in recognition of Independence Day. Construction will resume on Tuesday (7/7).

Paving continues; single lane closure on Aurora at night
Last week, crews laid the base layers of asphalt in the construction work zone along the east side of Aurora between N 165th and N 170th Streets. Paving was planned to continue on Thursday night (7/1) but was rescheduled due to rain. On Tuesday night (7/6), crews will lay asphalt between N 170th and N 175th Streets. On Wednesday and Thursday nights (7/7 and 7/8), paving will occur between N 175th and N 185th Streets. Asphalt requires time to cool, so conducting this work at night will help maintain access to businesses during the day.

A single northbound lane on Aurora will be closed at night to provide enough room to safely complete this base paving. The work zone will not yet be open to general traffic or pedestrians. Work is expected to begin around 8:00 p.m. and continue until approximately 6:00 a.m.

Joint utility trench installation (JUT) across Midvale Avenue; night and daytime closures
Crews will trench from the underground utility vault at the northwest corner of Midvale Avenue and N 175th Street to vaults located further east on N 175th, just east of City Hall. Midvale Avenue between N 175th and N 178th Streets will be completely closed at night on Tuesday and Wednesday (7/6 and 7/7) in order to dig across Midvale Avenue. Local access to apartments will be maintained; drivers and pedestrians should follow the direction of flaggers and detour signs.

A single westbound lane of N 175th Street will be closed during the day (between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.) and night this week to provide enough room to complete this work. JUT installation is expected to take approximately two weeks.

Forming and pouring concrete sidewalks, driveways and bus pads
Crews completed substantial sections of concrete sidewalks and bus pads last week on the east side of Aurora between N 165th and N 175th Streets. Concrete work will continue this week in this area. Concrete requires precise grading and time for pouring and curing, but crews will continue to maintain access to businesses by working on one side of a driveway at a time. This means driveways will be narrow, so please drive carefully in and out of businesses. Concrete work is expected to take another week or two in this area.

Concrete work will also continue between N 175th and N 185th Streets, with curb and bus pad installation on the east side of Aurora.

Vault work at N 185th Street
Vault installation will continue on N 185th Street.

Coming soon: Construction on the west side of Aurora
Currently, crews expect to complete the major pieces of construction on the east side of Aurora and switch over to the west side of Aurora within the next few weeks. Stay tuned for more information about the schedule and traffic lane shifts.

Ronald Place changes
Ronald Place is expected to be opened from Aurora to Top Foods after work shifts to the west side of Aurora. Ronald Place is being constructed to serve as driveway access for small businesses and Top Foods. Ronald Place will no longer provide a “shortcut” route from Aurora to N 175th Street, as new Bus Access and Transit (BAT) lanes will provide better access for drivers turning right onto N 175th Street from Aurora.

Please contact the 24-hour hotline at (206) 801-2485 or email if you feel there is an unsafe situation on the roadway.

Silva Cells - Aurora Phase II Is Top Project

City of Shoreline Aurora Project Silva Cell Installation. Photo courtesy City of Shoreline.

By Janet Way

Shoreline's Aurora Phase II Project is now the largest ever use in state of "Silva Cell" Deeproots System for tree planting.

The concept is designed to allow the street trees to thrive and let their roots expand without disrupting sidewalks or pavement. Street trees traditionally have a difficult time because of the conflicts that will result with adjacent paved areas. This technique allows the trees to grow naturally, because of the surrounding gravel beds and pervious sidewalks, which are supported by the "cells". It also combines stormwater runoff infiltration technology and water quality benefits.

The City of Shoreline is undertaking a huge remodel on the second phase of the Aurora Project with additional state of the art technologies to better address stormwater issues. The Shoreline City Council approved the "Hybrid Plan" Phase II project unanimously in 2007, and one of the major factors in arriving at a consensus was inclusion of this suite of Stormwater Control techniques. The Silva Cell Deeproot System is just one of many technologies being utilized including natural stormwater treatments such as pervious pavements and filtration concepts. The business community worked with the City to achieve working solutions to connect the highway to local businesses. The project is supported by grant funding from the State and Federal governments.

Providing Street Trees and landscaping was one of the goals of the project along with BRT (Bus Rapid Transit), safety and improved pedestrian facilities. Silva Cells are a great way to achieve this goal and allow the trees to prosper. That way they will hopefully avoid the fate of other street trees in our community recently.

Aurora construction update week of April 25

Monday, April 26, 2010

Roadway excavation

Crews will begin grinding and removing asphalt in the work zone area on the east side of Aurora. The roadway will then be excavated down to the final roadway sub-grade level. Asphalt removal and excavation is expected to take about a week and a half, and will be followed by extensive sub-grade preparation work. Temporary crushed rock driveways will be installed to maintain access to businesses during excavation. A small, rolled asphalt curb was temporarily installed along the west edge of the work zone to keep water out of the excavation area. After roadway excavation, crews will begin pouring concrete curbs and bus pads. This work will take several days and may impact access to driveways for a certain period of time. Affected businesses will be notified ahead of time.

Utility installations

Crews will continue installing utility vaults on Aurora , Midvale Avenue, N 182nd Street, and on N 175th Street during the daytime. Water and storm drain work will also continue on Aurora, 175th, and Midvale.

Temporary lane closures on Aurora starting Monday evening

Crews will continue installing water main lines across Aurora at specific locations between N 165th and N 175th Streets. This work will occur at night from Monday through Thursday and will require single lane closures in each direction during construction activity. Traffic will be directed by uniformed police officers and flaggers. All lanes will be reopened by 5:00 a.m.

Potholing on N 175th Street

To prepare for vault and joint utility trench installation on N 175th Street, east of Aurora, crews will “pothole” in the roadway to confirm the location of buried water lines. This work may require intermittent, temporary lane closures on 175th.

Street light base installation

Crews are installing permanent street light bases, or “luminaire” bases, on Aurora between N 165th and N 175th Streets.

Help us keep a safe construction area by:
  • Driving carefully in all construction zones and following the directions of signs and flaggers.

Echo Lake neighborhood hears about the Aurora Corridor project

Thursday, March 11, 2010

Attendees at the February 16 meeting of the Echo Lake Neighborhood Association heard Kirk McKinley, City of Shoreline Transportation Services Manager, talk about the Aurora Corridor Project. He reported that since the first mile of Aurora was completed, there has been a 60% drop in accidents on that stretch of road. In addition, people seem to be navigating the U turns without incident.

The construction for the second segment of Aurora. from 165th to 185th will begin soon. The utility companies - Ronald Wastewater, Puget Sound Energy, and Seattle Public Utilities water, are already out moving their lines.

There will be some differences in the second segment. There will be soil below the curb to act as a natural storm drain. The plants used will be the kind that filter chemicals. The medians will have cobbles. There will be art projects inlaid in the street with stainless steel, black concrete and sparkles at 175th and 185th, funded by the 1% for Art program.

Because of the building set-backs on the west side, there will be room for bio-swales to act as storm drains.

The project will cost $19 million, which because of the economy, is under budget. The City will have to give some of the money saved back to the granting agencies.

There will be construction differences this time because of what was learned on the first mile, to try to minimize disruption to businesses. Construction will finish one side before starting the other side. After both are finished, the medians will be constructed. Business entrances will be marked with plastic, water-filled jersey barriers. Construction is expected to be completed by June of 2011.

The next phase is 185th to 192nd. It is fully funded and 60% designed. It will go out to bid this spring and construction will start this summer. 192nd to 205th is not funded yet. The City has the funding to design, and some funding to purchase property, but is still working to identify full funding.

The Echo Lake Neighborhood Association meets on the third Tuesday of most months in Shoreline City Hall at 175th and Midvale. For more information, contact membership chair, Bob Whiteley, at 206-542-8789.
