Shoreline hires landscape maintenance workers

Thursday, April 4, 2019

New landscape crew

The City's new Landscape Maintenance team is now hard at work on right-of-way medians!

After years of struggling with the increasing cost of contractors, Shoreline formed an in-house team.

We believe you'll see noticeable improvements in the quality of landscape maintenance in the City.

The City workers are not responsible for the planting strips next to private property. It's the responsibility of the adjoining property owner to maintain those - whether a business or a private citizen.

Aurora Bridge and lane closures begin this weekend

Thursday, January 14, 2016

From WSDOT

SR 99 Aurora Bridge lane closures this weekend

Early morning plans on Saturday? Of course you have plans on Sunday as you tune in to watch the Seahawks! Well, wherever your weekend takes you be advised of some lane closures on the SR 99 Aurora Bridge. Our bridge maintenance crews will close two southbound lanes of across the Aurora Bridge at 6:30am on both Saturday, January 16, and Sunday, January 17, for bridge inspection work. One southbound lane will remain open to traffic during the closures. All lanes will reopen by noon each day.

DRIVER ALERT: Several weeks of SR 99 lane closures begin Monday night

Whether you drive or take the bus you’ll want to prepare for more traffic on SR 99 starting Monday, January 18. That’s when contractor crews working for the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program will close one lane in each direction between the Aurora Bridge and just north of Mercer Street for sign work. The closures will last through mid-February. Once that work wraps up crews will open those lanes but will need to close one southbound lane until early March.

Closures of SR 99 may affect traffic in Shoreline

Thursday, December 31, 2015

Hard to say how far north this will gum up Aurora, but be warned that SR 99 around-the-clock lane closures may cause traffic delays for several weeks.

Start planning now for extra congestion and traffic delays if you use SR 99 / Aurora Avenue North. From Jan. 18 through mid-February, contractor crews working for the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program will close one lane in each direction between the Aurora Bridge and just north of Mercer Street for sign work.

From mid-February to March only one southbound lane will be closed. You can read more about the work being done during the lane closures in this news release.

Completion of Aurora Corridor celebrated

Celebration of the completion of the Aurora Corridor

On Saturday, December 5, the City of Shoreline held a celebration at City Hall for the completion of the Aurora Corridor project.

From the City website

"Improving the Aurora Corridor has been a community goal since the City incorporated in 1995. With more than 45,000 vehicles and 7,000 transit riders using the corridor daily, Aurora is a major regional transportation corridor connecting Everett and Seattle. It is also a major retail and business corridor providing services and employment to thousands. Built in three phases over the past 10 years, the Aurora Corridor Improvement Project has already improved safety, fostered economic development, eased traffic congestion, enhanced environmental quality, and increased pedestrian mobility.

Photos courtesy City of Shoreline

"Twenty years ago it was a different story. Shoreline’s three-mile section of Aurora Avenue used to be one of the most dangerous stretches of road in the entire state, both for pedestrians and vehicles. According to the Washington State Department of transportation, in the two years (2003-2004) prior to construction beginning on the first phase of Aurora (145th to 165th), there was an average of 209 collisions per year along the entire corridor through Shoreline. In the two years (2012-2013) after completion of the second phase (165th to 192nd) the average number of collisions had dropped to 125, a decrease of 40%. During the same period of time, collisions resulting in injuries decreased by 56%. Collisions involving pedestrians declined by more than 40%.

"Today, the three-mile stretch through Shoreline is one of the nicest stretches of Aurora in the region and is serving as an example to other communities. The investments we’ve made in Aurora over the past 20 years will benefit the City for decades to come through better safety, more efficient transit, improved pedestrian access, and innovative stormwater management."

Roadway Work

The only things left to do on the Corridor are the new gateway sign at the southwest corner of N 205th Street and Aurora, and the landscaping, which will continue in various areas (median and roadside).

Aurora bypass lane provides access to businesses marooned by construction

Monday, June 8, 2015

Aurora bypass lane
Looking northward from N 192nd

Pictured above is the new, temporary bypass lane on the east side of Aurora, set up to provide business access while construction proceeds on the east lanes.

The building in the foreground is one of the apartment buildings at South Echo Lake with the James Alan Salon at ground level. The brown and blue building just north of it is the YMCA.

The driveway between the buildings is still open for incoming and outgoing traffic. You can also continue to enter and exit the site from N 192nd.

You can see the entrance to the bypass lane between the reader board and the orange cones / jersey barrier.

Every business and every residence from that point to N 200th can only be entered and exited from the bypass lane, which is one-way northbound.

This photo looks southward from N 200th. Look closely and you can see the sign for Pho 99 in the center of the photo. This popular Vietnamese restaurant is buried behind the construction and accessible only from the access road eight blocks south.

Also visible are signs for the Dollar Store, popular with moms planning birthday parties, a couple of new marijuana-related businesses, and multiple other tiny businesses which may or may not be able to weather this economic challenge.

Farther down the road, at the recently remodeled Woody's pub, the owner is calm about the challenges and is looking forward to the new parking spaces the City has promised him when the work is complete.

Businesses in the N 200th area are impacted by the accompanying construction on N 200th, which is sometimes open, sometimes not.

The construction continues north to N 205th, but Aurora Village has the entire section from N 200th to N 205th. The entrance to Aurora Village directly from Aurora is blocked, but Aurora Village businesses are not seriously hindered, with two entrances from N 205th and two from N 200th.
