Celebrate the Forest - Saturday June 29, 2024

Wednesday, June 26, 2024

On Saturday, June 29, 2024, at the Shoreline Historical Museum, you might feel the earth move under your feet!

Not due to a Carole King concert, or an earthquake, but from a performance from two drumming groups: Seattle Kokon Taiko and Just Humanitarian Project (JHP) Legacy.

Bring a blanket and picnic or get a meal from the Paparepas food truck, or a dessert from Sweet Dream Bakes. There will be several information booths and fun activities for kids and adults, as well as docent tours through the Miyawaki Urban Forest and the museum exhibit building.

The museum is celebrating the Miyawaki Urban Forest's first summer and our community that gives energy to its growth.

The free event begins at 5pm and is open to the public. At 6pm, the performance of two amazing drumming groups will begin - Seattle Kokon Taiko (SKT) and JHP Legacy.

Seattle Kokon Taiko

Seattle Kokon Taiko
(SKT) is Washington's first performing taiko ensemble. Taiko is a dynamic synthesis of rhythm, movement and spirit originating in Japan and evolving as a folk art over the last several hundred years.

According to Seattle Kokon Taiko,

"We try to combine the ancient with the modern; our repertoire is a mix of traditional pieces and contemporary compositions."
SKT is based in the local Japanese American community.
"Through taiko, we hope to contribute to the development of a uniquely Japanese American art form – Japanese in origin, American in expression – that weaves threads of continuity between generations and builds bridges of understanding among people of all nationalities and walks of life," said SKT.

JHP Legacy

JHP Legacy
is an arts organization based in Shoreline that provides culturally unique performances through dance and music.

"We are thrilled to perform 'Fume Fume,' a traditional musical piece created by the Ga people of Accra, Ghana. It is performed to ask God's blessings on mankind," according to Eben Pobee.

Secondly, JHP will perform Kpanlogo, a traditional drum/dance piece that emerged among the Gas in the 1960s, shortly after Ghana's independence in 1957. It was created and performed by the young people as a form of entertainment and for the purpose of socialization after a hard day's work.

When asked what else they would play, Pobee said, "Our third piece is ?? Give it a guess. You will have to be there to experience it!"

Skandia Midsommarfest June 30, 2024 at St. Edward in Kenmore

Celebrating Midsommar in the Pacific Northwest!
Sunday, June 30, 2024
11am to 6pm
Free Admission

Sign up TODAY to volunteer!

The summer solstice is celebrated by all the Nordic countries, although the celebration may be called by different names, and celebrated in different ways on different days. In Sweden it is called “Midsommar,” so Midsommarfest means Midsommar party or festival.

In Norway, the celebration of the solstice is called Sankt Hans Aften or Jonsok-kveld. In Denmark, the celebration is called Sankthans or Sankthansaften ("St. John's Eve") and in Finland it is called Juhannus.

Midsommarfest, as presented by Skandia Folkdance Society, is a traditional Swedish celebration of the summer solstice, recreated in as authentic a manner as possible, complete with  raising of a garlanded Midsommar pole, a serpentine dance around the pole, and scores of costumed musicians and dancers - traditions practiced in Sweden for centuries.

Over the years since the 1959 inception of Skandia Midsommarfest, the festival has expanded to include contributions from all the Nordic countries so that the rich cultural diversity of all those lands can be experienced by Skandia Midsommarfest attendees.

Spectators are invited to help hoist the 35-foot (previously 45-foot) pole with their muscles or cheers, and then to join in the rousing lĂĄngdans (serpentine running dance) around the pole, accompanied by the stirring music of massed musicians. Entertainment, food, crafts activities and good times continue throughout the park grounds.

A special focus of Midsommarfest is the Hemslöjdsmarknad - an avenue of traditional crafts where carefully selected crafts people demonstrate their skills and sell their wares. Traditional midsommar food and other Scandinavian delicacies will be offered.

And a flower crown -- the classic midsommarkrans -- ready to decorate to your own taste, will add the finishing touch to your midsommar celebration.

Midsommarfest showcases a wealth of wonderful music and dancing by the Northwest's premier Nordic folk musicians and dancers (and this area boasts some of the best in the Western Hemisphere).

Allspel 2024 led by Ellen Wijsman

Tunes to be played 2x each, in addition to the first, midsommar lĂĄngdans played longer. After the lĂĄngdans, start with Ringnessen; end with StockholmslĂĄten, with probably ~5-6 of the remaining tunes in between. (not in final order)

Creating an entryway for the Miyawaki Urban Forest

Friday, June 21, 2024

Imagine an entryway to the Miyawaki Forest

By Sarah Phillips

"Art should be something that liberates your soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further.” – Keith Haring.

The artist has a way of helping us see the unexpected.

The Miyawaki Urban Forest History Project at the Shoreline Historical Museum will have an entryway. It will be unexpected.

Roger Fernandes, a member of the Lower Elwha S’Klallam Tribe, a professor at the University of Washington, a storyteller, and an artist, has been commissioned to create the entryway for the Miyawaki Urban Forest.

His design was not what the members of the Miyawaki committee had in mind; It was better. More exciting, dramatic, and exactly what should be as an entryway.

Join us for when the conceptual drawings of the artwork will be revealed on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at the Shoreline Historical Museum’s Miyawaki Forest Celebration.

Fernandes’ entryway is made possible through a Rotary District Grant coordinated by the Rotary Environmental Club of Puget Sound Foundation.

The outdoor Museum field will be open at 5pm for a family friendly celebration of the Miyawaki Urban Forest.

Engage. Bring a picnic or get a meal from the Paparepas food truck, or a dessert from Sweet Dream Bakes as you enjoy yourselves as we stir up the earth with the sound of drums from Seattle Kokon Taiko and JHP Legacy. Here will be all-ages activities, booths, tours of the forest and the Museum.

The Miyawaki Forest is located next to the Shoreline Historical Museum at N 185th and Linden Ave N.

Edmonds Driftwood Players – announcing 66th season

Saturday, June 15, 2024

Edmonds, WA – June 14, 2024 – Edmonds Driftwood Players is excited to announce our upcoming 2024-2025 Season 66, which will include four mainstage productions. We feel incredibly grateful to be headed into our 66th Season of theatre in Edmonds and look forward to celebrating with the community!

Season subscriptions go on sale for return subscribers on July 9 and for new subscribers on July 23. Tickets for individual shows go on sale July 30.

Edmonds Driftwood Players is a volunteer-based, non-profit community theatre with the mission to produce live theatre that entertains, enriches, and engages the community. Established in 1958, Edmonds Driftwood Players is one of the oldest continually operating community theatres in Washington State.

In addition to mainstage productions, we produce an annual Festival of Shorts, which consists of eight short plays centered around a different theme each year. The finalists are selected from hundreds of playwright submissions from around the world by volunteer reading groups who were given blind copies for rating.

Our annual playwriting festival provides an opportunity for playwrights to have their works brought to life on stage, as well as gain recognition and potential awards. Past winners have later been developed into full-length award-winning plays!

EDP’s New Works program includes First Draft, a staged reading series of nearly production-ready scripts curated by the members of Driftwood After Dark (EDP’s group of local playwrights). With a few rehearsals and minimal staging elements, First Draft readings give audiences an opportunity to experience the sorts of plays not usually included in the Mainstage Season, and to be a part of the development process by participating in post-reading feedback sessions to help playwrights further polish their work.

EDP also has an education program which includes camps for students to learn the ins and outs of putting on a production as well as classes and workshops. Additionally, Take a Kid to the Theatre is our outreach program that allows us to share the joy and wonder of live theatre with families in local shelters and transitional housing.

Edmonds Driftwood Players also offers annual scholarships for deserving students interested in pursuing theatre education at any college, university or technical school in the United States.

2024-2025 Season 66 Mainstage Productions:

Murder Inn (September 13-October 6, 2024)
  • By Howard Voland and Keith McGregor
  • Show Synopsis: Murder Inn is set in New England, at the Barnsley Inn, a dilapidated eighteenth century inn, which is supposedly haunted by Marco, a knife-throwing poltergeist. A group of tourists, on a tour - Ghosts and Ghouls of New England - is forced, by a storm, to make an unscheduled stop at the Barnsley. What looks to be an unpleasant and uncomfortable detour soon turns into a night of mayhem and madness as knives begin to pop up… in the most unexpected places. As the storm builds and the body count rises, the survivors try to figure out who done it. And even more important- who’s likely to have it done to them next?
Miracle on 34th Street, The Play (November 22-December 15, 2024)
  • Adapted by Mountain Community Theater from the novel by Valentine Davies. Based upon the Twentieth Century Fox motion picture Miracle on 34th Street.
  • Show Synopsis: By chance, Kris Kringle, an old man in a retirement home, gets a job working as Santa for Macy's. Kris unleashes waves of good will with Macy's customers and the commercial world of New York City by referring parents to other stores to find exactly the toy their child has asked for. Seen as deluded and dangerous by Macy's vocational counselor, who plots to have Kris shanghaied to Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital, Kris ends up in a court competency hearing. Especially at stake is one little girl's belief in Santa. In a dramatic decision, the court confirms Kris as the true Santa, allowing Susan and countless other children to experience the joy of childhood fantasy.
Clue: The Musical (March 14-April 6, 2025)
  • Book by Peter DePietro. Music by Galen Blum, Wayne Barker, and Vinnie Martucci. Lyrics by Tom Chiodo. Based on the Parker Brothers’ Board Game
  • Show Synopsis: The internationally popular game is now a fun-filled musical that brings the world’s best-known suspects to life and invites the audience to help solve the mystery: who killed Mr. Boddy, in what room, and with what weapon. The audience receives forms to help them deduce the solution from clues given throughout the fun-filled evening. Three audience members choose from cards representing the potential murderers, weapons, and rooms; there are 216 possible solutions! Only one hard-nosed female detective is qualified to unravel the merry mayhem. Comic antics, witty lyrics, and a beguiling score carry the investigation from room to room. Even after the culprit confesses, a surprise twist delights the audience.
Drinking Habits (May 16-June 8, 2025)
  • By Tom Smith
  • Show Synopsis: Accusations, mistaken identities, and romances run wild in this traditional, laugh-out-loud farce. Two nuns at the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing have been secretly making wine to keep the convent's doors open, but Paul and Sally, reporters and former fiancĂ©es, are hot on their trail. They go undercover as a nun and priest, but their presence, combined with the addition of a new nun, spurs paranoia throughout the convent that spies have been sent from Rome to shut them down. Edmonds Arts Festival all weekend from Friday June 14 to Sunday June 16, 2024

Thursday, June 13, 2024

Edmonds, WA,  The 67th Annual Edmonds Arts Festival is this weekend.

Spanning nearly the entire city block from 8th Avenue on the east to Durbin on the west, in between Main Street and Dayton Street, there is so much to see and do. What do you need to know to have the best experience?

What is the Edmonds Arts Festival?

The Edmonds Arts Festival is a creative tradition, highlighting the best of Northwest regional art and fun family entertainment. It includes the three unique and distinctive spaces: the Field, the Edmonds Arts Plaza, and the Galleries.

The Field:

The playfield of Frances Anderson Center transforms into a buzzing artisan village for the weekend! Browse nearly 170 painters, sculptors, photographers, jewelers and other unique artisans selling their artwork. Relax and enjoy live music and performances on the Main Stage. Grab tasty bites from food vendors lining the street on 8th Ave or in the food alley between the Main Stage and the Galleries. And don’t forget the Beer & Wine Grotto run by Edmonds Rotary (21+ only).

The Edmonds Arts Plaza:

With a beautiful view and a more relaxed outdoor space, this spot exclusively highlights Edmonds-area artists. Peruse the 45 art booths, a preview show of the Edmonds Studio Tour, and non-profits with unique ties to the artistic world. Take in live acoustic performances by local musicians and writers. Bring young ones to the popular Kids Create area – with fun, hands-on art experiences and instruction for budding artists. The Edmonds Arts Plaza is located at a separate area on the west end of the Festival grounds above the Edmonds Library, accessed from 7th Avenue and Main Street or through the Frances Anderson Center building.

The Galleries

Inside the Frances Anderson Center is a diverse and highly rarefied world of juried art. View over 550 pieces by talented painters, sculptors, photographers, jewelers and other unique artisans. Take in delightful miniatures, amazing small paintings and fantastic small artisan works at the Small Works Marketplace. Be inspired by blossoming talent in the Student Art Galleries (in room 114 and lower level), which includes 1000 creations by Pre-K through 12th grade artists from the Edmonds School District, Alderwood Early Childhood Center, Holy Rosary and Soundview.

When is the Edmonds Arts Festival?

The Edmonds Arts Festival occurs every year on Father’s Day weekend. This year the dates and times are Friday and Saturday, June 14th and 15th 10am-7pm and Sunday, June 16th 10am-5pm.

Where is the Edmonds Arts Festival?

The Edmonds Arts Festival is located at the Frances Anderson Center and playfield, 700 Main Street, Edmonds, Washington.

Where do I park?

Downtown Edmonds offers free street parking for up to 3 hours. However, during this popular Festival, street parking is scarce. Save yourself the headache of trolling the city streets and park at Edmonds College to take the complimentary shuttle to the Festival.

Enter the parking lot at Edmonds College from the round-about on 204th Street SW and follow the signs to designated patron parking lots H, I or J. Then jump on one of the free shuttles that run every 15 minutes from Edmonds College to the Edmonds Art Festival in downtown Edmonds.

Pick up and drop off location at the Festival is eastbound on Main Street at the entrance to the Edmonds Art Plaza at the bus stop. Pick up and drop off location at Edmonds College is in front of Snohomish Hall.

Hours of shuttle service are the same as the Festival. 10am to 5pm

How ADA-accessible is the Festival?

The Frances Anderson Center and Edmonds Arts Plaza areas are wheelchair accessible via entrance ramps. Inside the Frances Anderson Center, ramps are available up to the second floor and an elevator is available to gain access to the lower level. Please use the designated parking spots near the center off of Main Street.

Note: The shuttle is not wheelchair accessible; we encourage individuals to use the designated parking spots at the center. A ramp from Main Street on the east end of the Frances Anderson Center can be used to gain access to the artist booths on the playfield. The terrain on the playfield is uneven and the grass can make it difficult to maneuver a wheelchair.

Are pets allowed?

No, pets are not allowed at the Festival. Service animals in uniform, of course, are welcome.

Why do we do it?

The Edmonds Arts Festival has been a cherished event in Edmonds since 1958. Tens of thousands of people flock to this event held annually on Father’s Day weekend to browse the galleries, meet artists, shop, socialize with friends, and be entertained by local performing artists in a beautiful setting in the charming, waterfront city of Edmonds – home of the first certified Creative District in Washington state.

A portion of profits raised by the Festival each year is given to the Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization which supports educational and cultural enrichment of our community through the arts. The Foundation awards art scholarships, education grants, and installs public art. In addition, it supports multiple non-profit art-related programs and organizations.

Learn more about what there is to see and do at  edmondsartsfestival.com.

Opening Friday: Move Over Mrs. Markham at The Phoenix Theatre in Edmonds

Wednesday, May 29, 2024

Opening this Friday May 31, 2024, it's Move Over Mrs. Markham by John Chapman & Ray Cooney directed by Eric Lewis.

This funny and fast-paced bedroom farce is super fun for everyone over the age of about 12 or 13. Cheeky and cute, with some saucy innuendo but no nudity.

"Move Over Mrs. Markham is set in a very elegant top floor London flat, belonging to Philip and Joanna Markham. The flat has been under renovation, and thus has been largely empty. Philip is a straight-laced publisher of children's books, and he shares an office with his partner, Henry Lodge, on the ground floor.

"Reluctantly, Philip agrees to let Henry borrow his apartment for the evening to "entertain" his latest girlfriend. At the same time, Joanna Markham is persuaded by Linda Lodge to let her borrow the apartment, so she can entertain her lover.

"What nobody knows is that the interior designer who had been decorating the apartment for the past three months has decided that this was the night he and the au pair girl would try out the new round bed! When all three sets of people converge on the apartment, expecting to find it empty, chaos and confusion ensue."

May 31-June 23, 2024
  • Adults 54 & under $25

Summer Performance

Featuring excerpts from the classical ballet “Raymonda” and a contemporary work “A Gentle Prelude” by Donald Byrd

June 1, 2024, at 7 PM
Edmonds Center for the Arts (ECA)
410 4th Ave N, Edmonds, WA 98020

Edmonds, WA – Olympic Ballet Theatre (OBT) closes the 2023-24 performance season with an eclectic production showcasing the diversity of ballet styles. This annual production honors tradition and celebrates innovation, featuring excerpts from classical ballets by famed choreographers of the past and exciting works by contemporary choreographers of today.

The 2024 production of Summer Performance presents Raymonda Suite, excerpts from Marius Petipa’s famed classical ballet Raymonda, and A Gentle Prelude, choreographed by Donald Byrd, Seattle-based Artistic Director of Spectrum Dance Theatre.

Raymonda (Suite)
Choreography: Marius Petipa
Music: Alexander Glazunov
Premiere: Imperial Mariinsky Theatre, Saint Petersburg, Russia, 1898

Raymonda is a classical ballet in three acts known for its exquisite choreography and beautiful music. Set in the 12th century, this ballet tells the love story of the beautiful young countess, Raymonda, and her fiancé who saves her from being abducted by a Saracen knight. Olympic Ballet Theatre will present excerpts from this timeless ballet, showcasing the technical prowess of its dancers.

A Gentle Prelude
Choreography: Donald Byrd
Music: Duke Ellington
Premiere: February 29, 2000

A Gentle Prelude is a movement from Donald Byrd's evening-length three-act abstract dance work, "In A Different Light," that explores the lesser-known musical compositions of the great Duke Ellington. Ellington (1899-1974), who achieved success as a composer, orchestrator, bandleader, and pianist, is often considered the greatest composer in the history of jazz music and one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.

A Gentle Prelude focuses on the solo piano and small ensemble works of Ellington as opposed to his more well-known "big band" pieces. The dance is a work for 7 dancers who appear to be in an imaginary 1930s romantic ballroom, and it details different types of relationships among shifting groups of dancers. Solos, duets, trios, and quartets variously describe how people connect and miss making connections.
