PNW Fleadh: An Irish Festival in the Northwest - Sunday March 24, 2024 in Everett

Wednesday, March 13, 2024

THE BEST OF IRISH CULTURE IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST

PNW Fleadh: An Irish Festival in the Northwest

Sunday, March 24, 2024 5:00 - 9:00 PM

On a Sunday evening, join the newly founded Irish & Celtic Society of Snohomish County in the final celebration of the St. Patrick’s Day season - the PNW Fleadh.

‘Fleadh’ (pronounced fl-aw)is an Irish word for festival, and this Irish festival will feature Irish musicians, dancers, chefs, and athletes across the Puget Sound.

Audience members will be entranced with the rhythms, tastes, and talents while celebrating the best of Irish culture.

“While we highlight Irish dancing and culture throughout the year, St. Patrick’s Day presents an opportunity to share the vibrant culture of Ireland with all in our community.
"The PNW Fleadh is a rare opportunity to see so many talented Irish performers in one place, and my dancers are honored to be a part of this evening’s entertainment,” commented Lauren Carroll-Bolger of the Carroll-Henderson School of Irish Dance.
The Carroll-Henderson Irish dancers are among the many performers of the evening.

March features many Irish celebrations throughout Seattle, but there are limited performances for audiences in North Seattle.

The Irish & Celtic Society of North Snohomish County is changing that with the PNW Fleadh and other upcoming performances. The PNW Fleadh is the ultimate end-celebration of the month and offers an opportunity for audiences not wanting to make the trek into the city.

In addition to many performances, guests are offered dinner by Shawn O’Donnells and can take part in an Irish bake-off and tea tasting competition.

For the bake-off, inspired Irish bakers can create their best soda and/or brown bread and submit their loaves for judgment by an esteemed panel of Irish bread enthusiasts.

Guests can also partake in a blind Irish tea tasting competition and see if they can identify the difference between Barrys or Lyons Irish tea.

Full Festival Line-Up:
  • Carroll-Henderson School of Irish Dance
  • Grafton Street Irish Dance Academy
  • Seattle Irish Dance Company
  • Seattle Gaels - Irish Athletes
  • Stout Pounders - Irish Musicians

Ravenna Quintet
Chamber Music for Piano and Strings
Sunday, March 17, 2024 - 4pm

Richmond Beach Congregational Church, United Church of Christ
Free - with donations gratefully accepted ($20 suggested)

The March 17 program will feature:
  • Piano Quintet in E♭ major, op. 44 by Robert Schumann
  • Mvmt. 1 - Piano Quintet in D minor, Op. 89 by Gabriel Fauré
  • Adagio - Divertimento in E♭ major, K. 563 by W.A. Mozart
Robert Schumann's Piano Quintet in E♭ major, Op. 44, stands as a pinnacle of Romantic chamber music. The first movement captivates with its expansive thematic development and emotional depth, seamlessly weaving together the voices of the piano and the strings. Schumann's innovative use of counterpoint and expressive melodies creates a rich tapestry of sound.

Gabriel Fauré's Piano Quintet in D minor, Op. 89, takes us into a more reflective space. Written in 1905-1906, it's a departure from the intensity of the Romantic style. The first movement, with its melancholic piano melody, gives a sense of deep introspection. Fauré's unique harmonies and delicate interplay between instruments make this quintet a masterpiece of French chamber music.

W.A. Mozart's Divertimento in E♭ major, K. 563, is a classical masterpiece, and the Adagio movement is a shining example of Mozart's specific genius. It's a graceful and emotional piece, where the strings engage in elegant conversation. Mozart's simplicity, intricate counterpoint, and the overall balance of the ensemble make this Adagio unforgettable, leaving a lasting impression of beauty and poise.

Performers:
  • Christine Chu, violin
  • Leah Anderson, violin
  • Nathan Hatch, viola
  • Jonas Chen, cello
  • Luke Raffanti, piano

A Cappella Northwest Barbershop concert Sunday at Richmond Beach Congregational Church

Saturday, March 9, 2024

The Recital Series at Richmond Beach Congregational Church presents:

Ensembles from A Cappella Northwest in Concert
Contemporary and Classic Barbershop Singing

Sunday, March 10, 2024 - 3pm
Richmond Beach Congregational Church, United Church of Christ
Free - with donations gratefully accepted ($20 suggested)

The (new!) Recital Series at Richmond Beach Congregational Church continues with a showcase of ensembles from A Cappella Northwest, an award-winning local barbershop society.

A Cappella Northwest (ACNW) is a dynamic participant in the ever-growing a cappella movement that has flourished over the last 30 years.

One shining example of ACNW's vocal prowess is Vocal Vintage, a tenor/bass quartet with over six years of harmonious collaboration and nearly 150 years of collective a cappella singing experience.

In October 2023, they clinched the Senior Quartet championship in the BHS Evergreen District. Their repertoire includes timeless classics like “It’s Only a Paper Moon,” “I Will Go Sailing No More,” “What a Wonderful World,” and “Old Folks are the Best Folks After All.”

Also featured is In the Mix, a new mixed quartet of singers making their debut performance on the recital series. Among the captivating melodies they will showcase are “Ebb Tide,” “I Got Rhythm,” “Almost Like Being in Love,” and “Lazy Day.”

Barbershop singing is a harmonious celebration. Tightly woven harmonies, ringing chords, and a seamless blend of voices in barbershop arrangements generate a distinctive, uplifting sound that elicits smiles and captivates hearts.
The spirited camaraderie among singers, coupled with the infectious energy of the music, fosters an atmosphere of joy and shared enthusiasm, making barbershop performances an engaging and entertaining experience for all.

Join us for a wonderful hour of barbershop singing, a time-honored musical tradition!

About the recital series:

Enter the world of "Vanity Fair," where rich storytelling and nuanced performances explore the complexities of human ambition and morality.

Directed by UW School of Drama Director MFA in Directing candidate Kate Drummond, this compelling production brings William Makepeace Thackeray's classic novel to life on stage, adapted by Kate Hamill.

Join us at the Floyd and Delores Jones Playhouse from March 7, 2024, to March 16, 2024, for an unforgettable theatrical experience.

Venue: Floyd and Delores Jones Playhouse 4045 University Way NE, Seattle WA 98105 - Google Map

According to director Kate Drummond, “The central image of this production is going for the brass ring on a vintage carousel."

She further reflects, "When the carousel slows to a stop and you're left with what you've done, can you say that you tried everything you could to grab that ring? Isn’t it better to have laid it all on the line, even if it makes you look a little silly along the way, than to have given up and just been along for the ride?"

In Vanity Fair, Becky, orphaned and disadvantaged, is cunning and ambitious, while Amelia, born into privilege, is well-intentioned but naive. As they each strive to secure love, success, and stability in the patriarchy of early 19th-century London, they face many obstacles to their dreams. Through Becky and Amelia’s travails, this thrilling, highly theatrical (im)morality play explores the flexibility of our morals when faced with the harsh realities of our lives.

Review: Ada and the Engine

Friday, March 1, 2024

Ada and the Engine, by Lauren Gunderson, currently playing at Driftwood Players in Edmonds. Directed by Eric Bischoff.

March 1-17, 2024 at the Wade James Theatre. Purchase tickets online or by phone at 425-774-9600

As the British Industrial Revolution dawns, young Ada Byron Lovelace (daughter of the flamboyant and notorious Lord Byron) sees the boundless creative potential in the “analytic engines” of her friend and soulmate Charles Babbage, inventor of the first mechanical computer.

Ada played by Guneet Kaur Banga

Ada envisions a whole new world where art and information converge—a world she might not live to see. A music-laced story of love, friendship, and the edgiest dreams of the future. Jane Austen meets Steve Jobs in this poignant pre-tech romance heralding the computer age.

The huge golden gears that encompassed the majority of the stage were a constant reminder of the size of the engine and a metaphor for the space that the engine filled in Ada and Babbage's imagination.

While the math and the technical aspects of the engine were beyond my skill set, Ada and Babbage's enthusiasm for the subject was contagious.

Babbage, played by Sumant Gupta, Maary Somerville, played by Elizabeth A. Shipman, and Ada, played by Guneet Kaur Banga. Photo by Dale Sutton

The incredibly talented cast crafted a mathematical story in words and built the engine in the audience's imagination. The sounds, the sights, and the movement of the gears were vivid in my mind.

I really enjoyed Lord Lovelace's character growth - BJ Smyth did an excellent job of expressing the gamut of infuriating to sympathetic.

A particular scene I really appreciated portrayed the passage of time. The actors interacted silently on stage while correspondence between Ada and Babbage over time was projected on the screen at the back. Narration in the characters own voices read the letters where Ada shared news of her marriage, birth of her children and subsequent illness while Babbage engaged her intellectually.

Olympic Ballet Theatre presents new works in Debuts
Featuring works by Norbert De La Cruz III and Eva Stone

Two Performances
February 17, 2024, at 7 PM
February 18, 2024, at 5 PM

Edmonds Center for the Arts (ECA)

Olympic Ballet Theatre (OBT) continues its 2023-2024 performance season with DEBUTS in February, presenting new works by contemporary choreographers. This production features Luna by Norbert De La Cruz III and Keep Me in Mind by Eva Stone.

“This is OBT’s third annual production of Debuts, and every year we look forward to bringing creative new works to our audience with this rep,” said artistic directors Mara Vinson and Oleg Gorboulev.
“Some of OBT’s patrons saw a sneak peek of Eva Stone’s tantalizing piece during our Autumn Auction & Dinner last November, and we can’t wait to present the full premiere in February.
"We are also thrilled to see OBT dancers work again with Norbert De La Cruz III, whose dramatic work, Until the Mermaid Drags You Under, was featured in the first production of Debuts in 2022. It is an honor to collaborate with both of these outstanding choreographers and to share the joy of contemporary ballet with our patrons.”

This production will include a “Meet the Artists” Q&A session on Saturday, February 17, 2024, immediately following the performance. Audience members will have an exciting opportunity to meet both choreographers and learn more about their creative process of bringing new works to life on stage.

ABOUT DEBUTS

Luna
Choreography: Norbert De La Cruz III
Music: Original score by Nathan Prillaman
Premiere: 2017, New York City Ballet

Luna was created for the dancers at the New York City Ballet for the NY Choreographic Institute in 2017.

In collaboration with composer and film producer Nathan Prillaman, Luna is a nebulous dance piece that was born out of a search for enchantment, wonder, and surrealism in a challenging world. Luna was the first ballet Norbert created upon forgoing his performance career, and in some ways, he wanted to unearth the gravity of this departure and relaunch his imagination through the lucidity of fantasy.

Through fluid neo-classical vocabulary, Luna oscillates within seraphic energies between Earth and the Moon, foregrounding the ballerina as a conduit into the divine. Part ceremonial and part spiritual, the dance mirrors the magnetism between people and their sacred relationships.

The piece orbits from idea to idea, melding from one constellation to another. It invites the audience to make associations between earthly desires and holding onto a dreamworld, gracefully shifting between the rigorous and the beautiful and from virtuosity into tranquility.

Keep Me in Mind
Choreography: Eva Stone
Music: Peggy Lee
Premiere: Olympic Ballet Theatre

Seattle-based choreographer/producer Eva Stone creates a glamorous and seductive world in her latest work Keep Me in Mind, set to the music of legendary singer and songwriter Peggy Lee. Stone digs deep into the methods of persuasion and attraction alongside a lush musical exploration of Lee’s tempting songs. Using a variety of dance styles from modern jazz to Neo-classical ballet, Stone offers up a moving and memorable journey of desire, memory, and longing.

TICKETS INFORMATION

DEBUTS will run two performances at the Edmonds Center for the Arts on February 17 and February 18,  2024. Tickets range from $24 to $45 and can be purchased at HERE or at the box office 425-774-7570.

The Lady Demands Satisfaction is a must see production at The Phoenix Theatre in Edmonds

Saturday, February 3, 2024

The Lady Demands Satisfaction
Written by Arthur M Jolly Directed by Eric Lewis
Featuring Katie Wallace and Josiah C Miller
February 2 - 25, 2024

Doors open at 6:45pm for a 7:30pm showtime time. Tickets

By Kindle Carpp

The Lady Demands Satisfaction is riotous fun. filled with swords, hijinks, and unexpected plot twists.

A young maiden learns that she must defend her home and land in a duel when she has never held a sword.

Katie Wallace and Josiah C. Miller
The first lesson that she learned was how to hold the sword, and she figured out not to hold the pointy end on the second try.

The lights come up on a puppet show of the death of Lord Pepperston during a duel which was a delightful non sequitur and completely unexpected.

From there, the rest of the play delights and amuses, walking the line between campy and just plain hilarious.

The cast and the characters are appealing, uniformly excellent with the talented actors working seamlessly as an ensemble.

Accents were believable and appropriate to the character and their social station, drawing a clear line between upper and servant class.

Talena Viydo as the Duchess
Swordplay is integral to the play. The Duchess is the finest blade in the land and fights nearly every character in the play, and they fight each other. Only one character was not involved with anything sharp or pointy.

The time and energy the cast spent with the choreography of the fight scenes is evident in their handling of the weapons.

Every cast member was skilled, everyone was suited to their roles, but my favorite character was the Duchess, played by Talena Viydo.

Josiah C. Miller played the dandy Osric with exactly the right amount of camp, and Chelsey Sheppard handled the physical comedy of Tilly the Maid beautifully.

The production was such a joy. I wish I had a digital copy so I could experience it on demand.

It's a must see production.

Meet the conductor at Philharmonia Northwest's concert February 4, 2024 at Shorecrest Performing Arts Center

Wednesday, January 31, 2024

Meet the Conductor: Stephen Rogers Radcliffe

As part of our ongoing Music Director Search, Philharmonia Northwest's 2023-24 Season will feature each of our Music Director Finalists in concert with the orchestra, conducting a program and guest soloists of the Finalist's choosing.

Our February 4 concert, Symphonic Dances, features the third of these outstanding conductors: Stephen Rogers Radcliffe.

CONCERT INFO

Sunday, February 4 at 2pm

PROGRAM
  • Engelbert Humperdinck: Overture to Hansel and Gretel
  • Frederick Delius: Double Concerto for Violin and Cello
  • Jessie Montgomery: Hymn for Everyone
  • Edvard Grieg: Symphonic Dances, Op. 64

Join us for a FREE pre-concert chat at 1:15pm with Music Director Finalist Stephen Rodgers Radcliffe and soloists Hal Grossman and Walter Gray!

A familiar face to Puget Sound audiences and music students, Stephen Rogers Radcliffe served as Staff Conductor for the Seattle Opera and Pacific Northwest Ballet, and for over a decade as Music Director of both the Marrowstone Music Festival and the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras.

He has also acted as Principal Guest Conductor of the Hungarian Virtuosi, and from 1987 to 1997 was the Music Director of the New York Chamber Ensemble.

Maestro Radcliffe has worked with a long and varied roster of internationally acclaimed artists, including pianists Van Cliburn and Andre Watts; opera stars Frederica von Stade and Dawn Upshaw; pop acts The Moody Blues and Blood, Sweat, and Tears; and composers John Corigliano, Aaron Jay Kernis, and P.D.Q. Bach.

A prize winner of the 1988 Arturo Toscanini International Conductors' Competition, Stephen Rogers Radcliffe was a student of Leonard Bernstein, Franco Ferrara, and Gustav Meier.

Maestro Radcliffe shares these notes about Sunday’s program:

"Few aspects of concert planning give conductors as much joy as the 'discovery' of an unjustly neglected work written by a well-respected composer. Edvard Grieg's Symphonic Dances is one such work.
"While Grieg's Peer Gynt and Holberg Suites are crown jewels in the symphonic repertoire, the composer's Symphonic Dances has received far less attention in concert halls.

"Nominally a set of four 'dances' written originally for piano and later transcribed for orchestra, the rhythmic, dance aspects of the four movements all surround sections of lyrical folksong melodies.

"Indeed, the juxtaposition of 'song' and 'dance' lies at the heart of this program. Engelbert Humperdinck's Prelude to Hansel and Gretel contains lyrical sections from the famous children's opera such as the Evening Prayer, along with sections of the witch’s dance pantomime or 'Hexenritt.'

"Similarly, Frederick Delius's Double Concerto (another unjustly neglected work!) combines endless strands of lyrical writing with passages of intense virtuosity for the violin and cello soloists.

"Even Jessie Montgomery's Hymn for Everyone spreads layers of soaring melodies in the winds and brass over rhythmically punctuated pulsations in strings.
