Two-act choral concert You Are Family in Shoreline February 24-25, 2024

Tuesday, January 23, 2024

You Are Family: Presented by Puget Soundworks, Seattle’s All-Gender, LGBTQIA+ Centered Chorus. This Concert Promises an Intimate, Living Room Experience of Familial Connections, Honoring Historical Significance.

Puget Soundworks is thrilled to announce You Are Family, a two-act choral concert that transcends the boundaries of traditional performances, creating a warm living room atmosphere for an immersive experience. This concert is scheduled to take place on February 24 and 25, 2024 in Shoreline, WA.

About the Concert

You Are Family goes beyond the surface, unraveling the rich tapestry of emotions within the concept of family, for both the LGBTQIA community and its allies. Historically, the term "family" has been a powerful and inclusive identifier within LGBTQIA+ circles, signifying a sense of belonging and acceptance.

Through their unique blend of voices, Puget Soundworks aims to explore the complexities and multifaceted nature of all familial relationships, celebrating the diverse connections that make up our nuclear and extended families.

Just in time for that mid-winter lull, the chorus is building a cozy ambiance inside the beautiful Sanctuary at Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Church.

The Sanctuary is a perfect and comfortable setting for an intimate concert and will enhance the feel of the show for every performer and audience member. Attendees can expect a relaxed atmosphere, enhancing the emotional resonance of the performances.

Executive Director, Kate Huisentruit, expressed her excitement, saying, "With 'You Are Family,' we want to create more than just a concert – we wanted to invite our audience into a space that feels like home, where they can immerse themselves in the beauty of the music and connect with each other on a personal level.
The historical significance of 'family' within LGBTQIA+ circles adds another layer of meaning to this experience. Puget Soundworks is a first, or second family for all of us."

To further enhance the sense of community, light concessions will be available before the show and during intermission, creating a delightful experience reminiscent of a cozy gathering among friends. In the lobby there will be dedicated mingling time, and the option to contribute to a memory wall highlighting what family means to you.

Tickets [$29-$100] for You Are Family are available now and can be purchased through our website

Don't miss this opportunity to be part of a unique choral experience that celebrates love, diversity, and the strength of connection.

Elsa Bouman - an artful life

Artist Elsa Bouman

"When you buy a piece of art, a ticket to a concert, theatre, or dance event, you are saying 'yes' to artists and the organizations that encourage their efforts.
"Shorelake Arts is one of those caring organizations that has been celebrating the arts for 35 years.
"The ShoreLake Gallery is one of their key programs and showcases a small, but elegant collection created by local artists. I am proud to sell works in this sparkling gem of a gallery."

--Elsa Bouman

A full-time mixed-media artist living and teaching in Lake Forest Park since 2007, Elsa Bouman worked as a graphic designer in the music industry and taught folk art in the Bay Area for 30 years.

Elsa's personality shines through in her work (available at the ShoreLake Arts Gallery). Her curiosity, sense of play, and focus on communication are visible in both her art and her personal style.

"I work hard and experiment a lot, and get such joy from my art. I am grateful to share my visions ... I want art, mine or someone else’s, to evoke a feeling.

"I have no formula, and realism eludes me. A fresh perspective, an odd view, or a focus on shapes -- the Dutch have a saying that translates into “Do normal, it’s strange enough.”

"Whether creating or teaching, my art is a spiritual testimony where I find my truest self." -Elsa Bouman

She's also taught fiber and mixed media workshops for students of all ages (many through ShoreLake Arts), and led teacher training in art education. While no longer teaching regularly, Elsa still shares her collage techniques and other art with the community in free, hands-on workshops sponsored by the Gallery.

In addition to the ShoreLake Arts Gallery, Elsa's work can be seen in exhibits throughout the region. "We're fortunate that Elsa chooses to show and sell her work with us."

King County Council approves $782 million Doors Open levy for access to science, heritage, and the arts in King County

Sunday, December 17, 2023

On Tuesday, December 5, 2023, the King County Council unanimously passed a new levy that will provide nearly $800 million in projected funding for access to science, heritage and the arts in King County over the next seven years.

The Doors Open science, heritage and arts levy will fund equitable access, support programming in public schools, and increase tourism and revenue, and feed the workforce pipeline to the arts and culture sector through a 0.1% sales tax.

Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles, the measure’s prime sponsor, said
“The Council’s overwhelming support speaks to the legislation’s countywide benefits and resounding focus on equity.
"It will live up to its name by ensuring that new start-up organizations will receive opportunities for essential funding to open their doors, and that more than 500 arts, science, and heritage organizations will have the resources they need to keep their doors open.

“Beyond that, these organizations can now expand their partnerships and programs in underserved communities where they will reach youth, seniors, homeless populations, victims of trauma, memory care patients, public school students, and so many more, while opening new doors for our youth to inspire them for their future.

Co-sponsored by Councilmembers Claudia Balducci and Sarah Perry, the Doors Open program is part of a decade-plus long effort to provide stability and growth for the cultural sector, and it arrives at a critical moment following the dramatic economic impacts the pandemic had on the arts and culture community.

Through an average annual cost of $40 per family, the levy will help the arts and culture community not only rebound from pandemic cuts and closures – particularly in marginalized or otherwise disadvantaged communities – but flourish to new levels with more funding than has ever been spent through public programs in King County.

By comparison, 4Culture, the designated funding agency for Doors Open, had expenditures of roughly $16 million in 2021. The measure builds on similar successful initiatives adopted locally in Tacoma and nationally in Denver, CO.

A full 15% of Doors Open expenditures will go to public school students, where art and music programs are being cut to balance budgets.

Annually, that’s at least $12 million to support partnerships, field trips, before- and after-school programs, transportation and admission costs, internships, free or discounted ticket programs and more.

Funding through the program will be dedicated to geographic equity, supporting the communities most hurt and isolated by the pandemic and its ongoing impacts, while also seeding new funding to grow additional cultural centers across King County.

Businesses rely on arts and culture organizations to drive tourism and revenue. The arts and culture sector accounts for 10.8% of the state’s gross domestic product, roughly $72.8 billion. Doors Open spending will provide a direct return on investment for the local economy.

Having grown up in the 80s, the 1971 Charlies & the Chocolate Factory frequently featured in my childhood, so it was quite a treat to see a live production.

There were a few changes from my childhood classic that I was quite charmed by, namely the inclusion of The Squirrels and additional musical pieces.

The Gene Wilder movie switched out The Squirrels from the book for chocolate-laying geese. I suspect that it was the 70s lack of cgi and their need to use puppetry that led to this decision. However, this stage production did not allow size to be an issue, allowing for four foot tall, nut-cracking squirrels.

The second change was the inclusion of additional musical numbers. I particularly enjoyed "I Eat More" sung by Augustus Gloop and his mother.

A minimalist setting was created with projections on a background screen. The lack of scenery made every prop and costume invaluable. Thankfully the costumes and props were on point.

Some of the costume highlights were Willy Wonka, the Oompa Loompas, and Veruca Salt.

The boat was the highlight of the props, as it sailed around the stage with a load of passengers.

A joy and a delight of the stage direction was the oompa loompas, as they transformed into the machinery of a candy-making gumball machine.

BJ Smyth's Willy Wonka was the backbone of the show.
Photo by Dale Sutton of Magic Photo.

Out of such a large ensemble there were some standout performances.
  • Kendra Tamär Budd (Ms. Beauregarde) is a gem and sure to be an audience favorite.
  • Royce Napolitino (Phineous Trout) you can't take your eyes off of him. Half of his performance genius was his facial expressions.
  • Merry Senn (Mrs. Gloop) Mama Gloop's humorous interpretation leaves a lasting impression in spite of her short time on stage.
  • Shannon Johnson (Veruca Salt) draws the eye with her strong performance.
  • BJ Smyth (Willy Wonka) (cameo as Candy Man) was the backbone of the show.
All in all this production was a sweet treat of pure childhood nostalgia.

Laugh until your face hurts at A Nice Family Christmas at The Phoenix Theatre

Sunday, November 26, 2023

A Nice Family Christmas, by Phil Olsen, directed by Eric Lewis, opened November 24, 2023 at The Phoenix Theatre in Edmonds to an uproarious response from the opening night crowd.

I was surrounded by audience members who were snorting with laughter.

The scene opens on a midwestern living room decorated for Christmas, missing only the scent of cookies and a sprig of mistletoe.

Our cast of characters includes Carl, the Family Disappointment; Michael the Golden Brother; and forgotten little sister Stacy.

Rounding out the cast are Carl's peacemaker mother, floozy grandmother, and uninvited lush of an uncle.

Susan Connors, Jag, and Shaylyn Reed

The family dysfunction is evident immediately as Carl arrives and his mother and grandmother are disappointed that he isn't Michael.

As the night progresses we watch the family attempt to be civil, assisted by a bribe from their mother, as their secrets come to light.

And let me tell you - the tea is hot. I found myself gasping at the gossip that was being spilled. If this fruitcake family weren't so funny, it would be a disaster. There are so many one liners that were delivered so well that the cast often had to pause for audience laughter.

And the unsaid question of the night was: will the magic of Christmas heal their relationships?

If you want to laugh until your face hurts and be immersed in family gossip that will brighten your holiday season, please go see A Nice Family Christmas.

Magical Strings Celtic Yuletide concert in Shoreline December 10, 2023

Become part of Magical Strings Yuletide to experience joy and warmth, and shine a light into the darkness of winter!

Celtic Yuletide returns for another year, bringing generations together for a joyful celebration as the Boulding family and special guests weave their magic with lively and soulful music, storytelling, songs of the season, and stellar Irish step-dancing.

Philip and Pam Boulding’s Celtic harps, dulcimers, concertina, accordion and more are accompanied by their children and guests on violin, cello, whistles, harmonium, guitar, vocals, and percussion.

The Bouldings have been performing since the days of the local medieval and renaissance fairs. Their children have been raised in a musical tradition and are part of the family performances along with a large cast of musicians and Irish step dancers.

Shoreline is a new venue for them this year. The concert is being produced by the Tara Academy of Irish Dance in North Seattle so there will be many amazing Irish dancers at this show.

  • Daughter Brittany, violinist with the Seattle Symphony, will be able to appear with her parents at all the shows this year, along with her husband, Prescott, operatic baritone, who will add his vocal magic.
  • Son Brenin, cellist and juggler, will bring his entire family.
  • Rowan, the beautiful award-winning Irish dancer, her brother Haydn, a world champion Irish dancer and a brilliant percussionist, and award-winning dancers from the Tara Academy of Irish Dance, headed by Brenin’s lovely wife Sara.
  • Their son Morgan will be there, playing the organ and the tin whistle.
  • The acclaimed Canadian fiddler and step dancer Jocelyn Pettit is able to join the family once again for this 45th year, along with, as always, Dublin guitarist/singer Colm McCarthaigh.
  • It wouldn’t be Yuletide without dynamic percussionist Matt Jerrell and his whole family, young dancers with their family’s Tara Academy.

About Magical Strings

Philip and Pam Boulding founded Magical Strings in 1978, the same year they began the Celtic Yuletide Concerts with their family.

They have performed throughout the U.S., Canada, Ireland and Japan, toured and recorded 21 albums on four labels.

They build their own line of Celtic harps and hammered dulcimers for an international clientele, run the School of Magical Strings and host the Magic Hill Summer Harp Camp at their beautiful 5-acre home overlooking Puget Sound.

Once called the “Von Trapps of the Northwest” by local media, their love of music is embraced by their five grown children and nine grandchildren age 22 years to one year old, who join the family for Celtic Yuletide.
