Native American Story Pole stands in Kenmore's Town Square

Thursday, November 9, 2023

Coast Salish carver and artist, Ty Juvinel, unveils the new story pole in Kenmore's Town Square on August 26, 2023.

KENMORE, Wash. – On Saturday August 26, to kick off the City’s 25th Anniversary Celebration, Tulalip artist Ty Juvinel unveiled Kenmore’s newest piece of public art, an indigenous story pole, in Town Square.

A story pole is a traditional Native American way of telling stories and this pole shows an important legend of the Tulalip people, that of the killer whales.

Deputy Mayor Melanie O’Cain said of the unveiling, “What a beautiful way to celebrate 25 years of Kenmore as a city while also honoring the First People who have called this area home since time immemorial.”

The story pole depicts the tale of two brothers, ancestors of the Tulalip Tribes who lived long ago at Priest Point. The brothers were seal hunters who went into the ocean to live as orcas, returning to their people only in the Tribe’s most dire circumstance.

One year when the people had been unable to gather as much food for winter as usual, they were starving by spring when the salmon run began but just when they thought their suffering was over, hordes of seals came and ate up all the salmon.

In despair, the people called out to their ancestors for help. The brothers heard their pleas and arrived as orcas who hunted the seals and threw their bodies onto the beach, both saving the people from starvation and preserving the salmon runs for generations to come.

Today the orca is the logo of the Tulalip Tribes and they are greeted by the Tulalip people at sea with the words “Killer whale, killer whale, your ancestors were also my ancestors.”

Juvinel, a member of the Tulalip Tribes, is a Coast Salish carver and artist, a cultural preservationist, activist, and storyteller. He has previously created artwork for the Seattle Children's Museum, the University of Washington Burke Museum, the Seattle Library, the Tulalip Hibulb Museum, the Edmonds Historical Museum, the City of Edmonds, the City of Olympia, and the Museum of History and Industry.

He got his artistic start young with drawing and graffiti, making his first paddle around age 11 upon discovering Coast Salish art and carving. He became a graphic designer for the Tulalip Tribes as an Apprentice Carver and has written and illustrated two children’s books, How Mouse Moved the Mountain and How Puppy Got Long Ears.  View more of his work here

Special thanks go out to Suzanne Greathouse of the Kenmore Heritage Society, who said, “I’m so happy the city commissioned this incredible indigenous art and it will now be displayed here permanently for everyone to enjoy.”

This could not have happened without her efforts and support to make this story pole a reality.

The City of Kenmore is situated upon the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish Peoples so it is with the deepest respect that the City dedicates this indigenous artwork in a beloved public space where it can be viewed and enjoyed by all.

Michael Goedel performing a traditional hoop dance in Kenmore's Town Square on August 26, 2023.
The story pole unveiling was part of the City’s 25th Anniversary Celebration which also featured a traditional hoop dance, a form of sharing culture and celebrating unity that embraces Native American culture, performed by Michael Goedel.

Over 1,000 attendees braved the heat for the opportunity to enjoy cultural booths, local vendors selling goods at the Hangar, complimentary cake and ice cream, and an array of food trucks and entertainment.

Live music provided a party atmosphere to the day and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Advisory Committee organized DEIA-themed literary and artistic activities and giveaways that delighted the event attendees.

Rainbow City Performing Arts announces hiring of first Executive Director: Damien Hall

Monday, October 30, 2023

Damien Hall, Executive Director
Rainbow City Performing Arts
SEATTLE, WA – After twenty-five years as a volunteer-operated association, The Rainbow City Performing Arts (RCPA) has a cause for celebration: hiring Damien Hall as RCPA’s first Executive Director.

In RCPA’s organizational structure, the Executive Director position sits right below the Board and has the responsibility as the head of all Staff.

Damien manages the Staff, many of whom are volunteers, while also focusing the Board on decisions about policies, fundraising, and budget. RCPA’s Executive Director position is still part-time, due to financial constraints.

Damien’s 10 years of volunteerism with the organization include holding the roles of Director of Operations, Director of Membership, Librarian, Percussion Section Leader, and President.

From 2022-2023, Damien was operating as the President and sole authority for both operational and artistic decisions, and the return from the pandemic shutdown created an opportunity to rebuild and evolve the organization with a central vision.

To name just a few, he:
  • Doubled pre-pandemic revenue in his first year of leadership;
  • Welcomed 150+ members per quarter across seven different performing ensembles;
  • Focused DEIAB in policymaking by creating a Director of DEI role on the board; and
  • Established a Pride week performance event to support partner nonprofits and musicians in partnership with Seattle Center.
Rainbow City Performing Arts is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing education and performance opportunities for LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies in the Seattle area.

RCPA's diverse ensembles and chamber groups actively participate in community events and pride festivals throughout the year as well as producing their own events to uplift LGBTQIA+ people.

The organization's mission is to foster diversity, inclusion, and artistic expression, creating a welcoming space for musicians and performers from all walks of life.

Ceramics
Home studio sale 503 N 190th St
Friday November 3, 2023 - 4 - 8pm
Saturday November 4, 2023 - 9am - 4pm

Diane is a Shoreline resident of 30 years and among her many interests she has collected pottery her whole life. Seven years ago, she made the decision to make some herself.

Self-taught and dedicated to constant learning and experimenting, she finds ways to express all her passions through ceramic arts. “There really are no limits and the variety drives my creativity.”

Hand decorating wheel thrown forms with original carvings or leaves and a wide variety of stoneware glazes make each piece unique.

Her love of birds inspires hand sculpted and glazed nuthatches, sparrows, and loons; hand painted wild bird eggs and nests made from nature.

Her love of food and pottery meet at a delicious crossroad as she considers roasted carrots in a cobalt blue bowl or a wild rice and kale soup in a wide rimmed bowl of speckled green.

All the work is mid-fire stoneware, applied with lead-free glazes.

Spooky Songs of the Sea Halloween Concert Saturday October 28, 2023

Spooky Songs of the Sea Halloween Concert at the Couth Buzzard in Greenwood.

William Pint and Felicia Dale are Seattle based folksingers who specialize in songs of the sea and their repertoire is seemingly endless.

For their Halloween Concert they pull from their nautical repertoire for ghostly sailors, haunted ships, cursed crews — plus some of their long time favorites of the season, "and a number of songs we've never played before a live audience! (talk about scary!)"

Saturday, October 28, 2023, 7:30pm at The Couth Buzzard bookstore 8310 Greenwood Ave N, Seattle, WA 98103, 206-436-2960

The Couth Buzzard is a bookstore / cafe, like a smaller and scruffier version of Third Place Books and Third Place Commons combined. You will need to go very early - the store is in the main business street of Greenwood and it will take a while to find parking on side streets.

They'll have coffee for sale but may not have food late in the evening - the menu looks good, though.

The performance space is also small and when it fills up, they set up chairs down the aisle. You can hear but not see.

But I'm an old folkie and I love Pint and Dale and the music they keep alive through their performances.

Calendar Girls at the Phoenix Theatre starts with a laugh that doesn't really stop

Friday, October 20, 2023

The Calendar Girls in their tai chi class
By Kindle Carpp

If you don’t like to laugh please avoid this play. Calendar Girls starts off with a laugh that doesn’t really stop. The humor has great timing and great energy. It has a thread of a sad story that leads to some touching moments.

Tim Firth’s hilarious play is based on the true story of eleven Women's Institute members who famously posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukemia Research Fund in 1999 after the husband of a member dies of the disease.

Director Renee Gilbert said, “Eleven women decided to laugh in the face of traditional propriety and do what they felt needed to be done in order to help overcome grief. And now their laughter is passed onto us.”

There was a fun use of props to allow the actors to be “nude” on stage.

The ensemble cast and their comedic timing made this lighthearted comedy easy to watch. I especially enjoyed Melanie Calderwood’s subtle physical comedy in her portrayal of the doddering Ruth. And Ingrid Sanai Buron made Marie unlikable in the most authentic kind of way.

I particularly took notice of the costumes by Elizabeth Shipman. It was a subtle use of color in a neutral colored set. They felt like an expression of each character.

Calendar Girls runs through Sunday, October 29, 2023,
  • Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm
  • Sundays at 2pm
Adults $25.00
Seniors 55+/Students/US Military and Veterans $20.00

Cry It Out now playing at As If Theatre in Kenmore

Wednesday, October 18, 2023

Jessie (Taryn Pearce) and Lina (Gabriela Noble) are new mothers and new friends

Cry It Out is currently playing at the charming theatre in the Kenmore Community Club, 7304 NE 175th St, Kenmore, WA 98028.

Cry It Out is a drama that uses humor to add levity to lighten the mood and not bog down the audience in the everyday struggles of life. The topics brought up are universal to American families and the complicated relationships we have with our spouses, parents and ourselves when we have major life changes, in this case children.

The dialog and acting were so authentic that I had to hold myself back from joining in on Jessie and Lina's backyard conversations.

The talented actors brought me so deep into the story that I wanted to both give Adrienne a cup of overly hot coffee so she would burn off her taste buds and hug her once we were given a window into her world.

And I really wanted to give Mitchell a gift certificate for therapy because he made me so uncomfortable and it was clear it was because he had issues that had not been resolved.

Cry It Out features the talent of Taryn Pearce (Jessie), Gabriela Noble (Lina), Kira Dorrian (Adrienne), and Varun Kainth (Mitchell), with a creative team that includes Ken Michels (Set Design), Gwyn Skone (Lighting Design), William French (Sound Design), Ali Kidder-Mostrom (Costume Design), and Chandria Danelle (Property Design).

This story of three new mothers was written by Molly Smith Metzler (Shameless, Orange is the New Black, and Maid), and directed by Shoreline resident Betsy Mugavero.

Cry It Out runs two more weekends October 19-29, 2023 – Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays at 7:30pm, Sundays at 5:00pm,  90 minutes, no intermission

Tickets: $25 and $20 (Seniors / Students) available at asiftheatre.com

Cry It Out opens Thursday, October 12, 2023 at As If Theatre in Kenmore

As If Theatre Company presents CRY IT OUT,
a comedy with dark edges, by Molly Smith Metzler

October 12-29, 2023

As If Theatre Company is pleased to announce its sixth mainstage production, Cry It Out, written by Molly Smith Metzler (Shameless, Orange is the New Black, and Maid), and directed by Betsy Mugavero.

Cry It Out holds both a microscope and a megaphone to the joys and perils that today’s mothers face. This heartwarming comedy takes a sharp and honest look at the power of female friendship, the dilemma of going back to work after being home with a newborn, and the effect that economic and social class has on parenthood in America.

“It’s an investigation of class, friendship, and resilience through the lens of working parenthood in America,” says director Mugavero.
“This play is such a poignant look at both the absurdity and profundity that follows in the wake of a newborn for those first few weeks of delirious bliss and unimaginable terror. I can't wait for audiences to laugh and cry with us.”

Cry It Out features the talent of Taryn Pearce (Jessie), Gabriela Noble (Lina), Kira Dorrian (Adrienne), and Varun Kainth (Mitchell), with a creative team that includes Ken Michels (Set Design), Gwyn Skone (Lighting Design), William French (Sound Design), Ali Kidder-Mostrom (Costume Design), and Chandria Danelle (Property Design).

‘A Witch’s Gift’ Opens at Graphite Arts Center in Edmonds

A Witch's Gift

‘A Witch’s Gift’ Opens at Graphite Arts Center
Artist Reception Thursday, September 21, 5 - 8pm
Open Saturdays, September 23 - October 28, 12 - 4pm

After two months of in-house work constructing the flora and fauna, and creating the critters and creatures for the fantastical, full-scale exhibit A Witch’s Gift, the immersive experience at The Gallery at Graphite opens to the public.

A Witch’s Gift is the work of artist Perry Jakobs who has worked in residency at Graphite since July 2023. Jakobs is an imaginative, hardworking, cheerful artist with a unique vision for storytelling. Through this installation exhibit Jakobs has succeeded in fashioning their imaginative fantasy world into life size elements both real and created.

A Witch’s Gift is a full-gallery installation complete with a fully decorated, life-size antique bedroom; an ancient apothecary; a pastel colored, mushroom-filled forest, and much more.

Jakobs has described the project as a theatrical, narrative experience – “a whimsical, bubbly dreamscape! ...with an undertone of melancholy.”

Apothecary shop

The concept for A Witch’s Gift is an original story written by Jakobs, in collaboration with their brother Noel Hansen. In the tale, a young girl finds herself in a world where she does not quite fit in. Through hard work, and a personal exploration of how to truly apply her unique talents, the youthful protagonist learns she can make this world a better place for all.

The handmade book with the complete written tale is part of the exhibit.

The Graphite Arts Center is proud to be able to feature Jakobs and their work. Visitors are invited to meet the artist most Saturdays and join them for a walk through of the exhibit.
