Lunch with Roger Fernandes at the Thai Bistro
From left: Sarah Phillips, Maureen O’Neill, Lauren Brumbaugh, Angie Hurt, Diane Lobaugh, Roger Fernandes, Sally Yamasaki

By Sally Yamasaki

Roger Fernandes, artist in residence at the Shoreline Historical Museum, took a break from working to have lunch with some volunteers at the Shoreline Historical Museum.

Fernandes has been carving petroglyphic art for a Miyawaki Urban Forest Welcome Rock project entitled, “The Rock Holds the Memories of our People” funded by the Rotary Foundation.

This summer, Fernandes, artist, storyteller, educator, and member of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe has carved images each inspired from local Coast Salish Tribes on a 6’ x 3’ glacial rock.

Those who attended lunch, learned how stories are living entities and in them hold history, philosophy, science and more dating back to the end of the last glacial period (c. 8000 BCE, 10,000 years ago).

“I loved learning that literacy isn't locked within a book. The oral tradition of Native American story telling is meant to be living and changing in order to seek answers both spiritually and scientifically within the current world for which we live,” according to Lauren Brumbaugh.

Roger Fernandes pointing out one of the carvings that represents a story.

Fernandes explained that he learned from one of his teachers that the powerful form of a story is when it is told. When this happens, the moisture of the storyteller’s breath becomes the story, and it gives the story a unique form and comes alive.

“A story is a living thing. I give shape to it; I give life to it; and when the story is alive that means it changes – it means I might tell you a story from like the Maiden in Deception Pass and I would tell you that story and then you hear another person tell it and say—that’s not the way Roger told it…. Well, yeh because every teller is going to tell it a little bit differently. And because the story is alive, it changes too,” shared Fernandes.

When Fernandes was asked, “Why is it important for a story to breathe?” He answered, “It is like us – it needs to breathe so it can live.”

As an example, he then told us about a poem he once wrote.

“I wrote a poem once- I said they took a sword, called a pen, and they captured the word. They took the word and put it in a cell, they called a page; They took the page and they put it in a prison, and they called it a book. And they said it was good.”

Fernandes continued, “I’m not criticizing literacy. Literacy is a powerful tool. But when it becomes all powerful, we have forgotten the other gifts that …. there is a book called ‘the orality of literacy.’”

According to Sarah Phillips, “Having lunch with a master storyteller is an experience. Roger Fernandes is a master storyteller. So, lunch with him was an unforgettable experience.”

The Miyawaki Urban Forest at the Shoreline Historical Museum will be hosting two opportunities to learn from Roger Fernandes.

Saturday, September 28th, 10 AM – 12 Noon

LIFE OF THE FOREST – Storytelling

Roger Fernandes will share the traditional stories of the local Coast Salish Tribes that connect those cultures to the living world around them.

Sunday, December 8th, 3:30 – 5:15 PM

MIYAWAKI FOREST FIRST BIRTHDAY PARTY – Welcome Rock Dedication

We will celebration the Miyawaki Forest turning one year old. Fernandes will discuss the inspiration behind the Welcome Rock and highlight some of the stories he carved.

Review: Murder Inn at the Wade James Theatre in Edmonds

Review by Kindle Carpp
Murder Inn is set in New England, at the dilapidated eighteenth-century Bardsley Inn, supposedly haunted by Marco, a knife-throwing poltergeist. A group of tourists, on a tour - Ghosts and Ghouls of New England - is forced by a storm to make an unscheduled stop at the inn.

What looks to be an unpleasant and uncomfortable detour soon turns into a night of mayhem and madness as knives begin to pop up. As the storm builds and the body count rises, the survivors try to figure out who done it. And even more important - who’s likely to have it done to them next?

This engaging play begins when our stranded guests arrive at the Barnsley to discover it is a ramshackle inn which has closed for the season, opening only because of local flooding and landslides due to the rain.

The proprietress maintains that the inn is haunted by her long ago murderous ancestor, while her son is skeptical that the ghost even exists.

The set design by Thomas LeClair stands out, setting the tone and scene of the decrepit inn. Look for the small details such as peeling wallpaper and water-stained walls. One aspect of the set that I particularly enjoyed was a door masquerading as a bookcase with an authentic-looking collection of books.

Everyone in this large cast performed well but there were a few actors who shone.
  • Tina Devrin embodied the exasperation of customer service when you really hate the customer.
  • Ingrid Sanai Buron embodied the mean girl trophe to perfection.
  • Jennifer Nielsen did a wonderful job of presenting as the benign and uncomplicated retired school marm who just happens to be sharp as a tack.
  • Rachael Risbell Walters really committed to her character’s kooky bit without upstaging the rest of the cast.
And the chemistry build between Olivia Alderton and Landon Whitbread was timed well and very believable. I literally caught myself “aw-ing” at their cuddling up on the sofa.

Just in time for the Halloween season you can check out Murder Inn and I promise you won’t have any reservations about the experience.

Call for Artists for new public art at Horizon View Park

Thursday, September 12, 2024

Horizon View Park in Lake Forest Park

The LFP Garden Tour and City of LFP have put out a call for Artists (RFQ) for new public art at Horizon View Park.

The selected artist(s) will create a free-standing artwork to be located in an outdoor area visible to motorists, pedestrians and park users.

The piece will reference the history and location of the area and be in harmony with its surroundings. It may be abstract or traditional, and possibly functional. It will be composed of materials suitable for long-term outdoor display/use and easy to maintain. The artwork must be new work created for this site.

The sculpture will most likely be located in an area near the entrance and/or play ground at Horizon View Park which is located at the highest point in Lake Forest Park.

This area has mounding terrain and would be enhanced by a creative bench or other interactive element.

The park provides an opportunity to contemplate the night sky, surrounding mountains and territorial landscape. Amenities for active use of Horizon View Park include a soccer field, tennis court, half-court basketball, walking paths around a reservoir and through a wooded area, picnic tables, and a playground.

Horizon View Park is located in a residential neighborhood and is enjoyed by all ages and abilities. While there are several pieces of public art in the Town Center/City Hall area of LFP, this will be the first public art installation in the Horizon View Park neighborhood.

The full RFQ can be seen here

Questions can be directed to publicartlfpgardentour@gmail.com

Hillwood Neighborhood Association project to restore Einstein Salmon now underway

Saturday, August 17, 2024

This explanatory poster is now attached to the vacant pole where the fiberglass salmon has been on the corner plaza at 3rd Ave NW & NW 195th St in Shoreline. The first salmon, the female Coho, will reappear there when it's restored. The male Coho will be next.

Hillwood Neighborhood Association (HNA) has begun the process of restoring the iconic fiberglass salmon installed on the corner plaza at Einstein Middle School at 3rd NW & NW 195th in Hillwood Neighborhood.

The fish are owned by Shoreline Schools who have given HNA permission to remove the fish and take them off-site for restoration work.

After safely moving the salmon to the work site, HNA board members Paul Lewing, Kim Brazell (with back to the camera), Jocelyn C. Asher and volunteer Rick Asher discuss the paint removal process. Photo by HannahJunePhotography

Research for this project began at the end of 2022.

In July of 2024, the City of Shoreline approved the funding for the restoration through a Neighborhood Mini-Grant. The project has now begun!

HNA board member Kim Brazell and volunteer Rick Asher transport the first salmon to a carefully cushioned van for the ride to where it will undergo cleaning, repairing, and painting.

Once the work is done, the salmon will be reinstalled and dedicated in a public ceremony in October 2024.

If you would like to help with the project, contact Hillwood at myHillwoodmail@gmail.com

The Hillwood webpage will be active later this month.
