All pet fees waived Oct 2-4 at the Seattle Humane Adoption Blitz

Wednesday, September 30, 2015

Seattle Humane’s annual Adoption Blitz means hundreds of families can adopt a dog, cat, puppy, kitten, rabbit or other furry critter without the typical adoption fee. Fees are waived for all pets in the care of Seattle Humane in Bellevue for three days only, Friday, October 2nd through Sunday, October 4th.

"Our mission at Seattle Humane is to make owning a companion pet accessible to all King County-area residents," says Shelter Director Lauren Hilaman. "Although our usual fees are low, Adoption Blitz helps us reach even more wonderful animal lovers who want to open their hearts and homes to an animal that needs a family."

Each year, hundreds of pets are adopted during Adoption Blitz. Adoption Manager Nicolette Voigt points out that Seattle Humane's Adoption Advisors carefully vet each adopter by conducting one-on-one interviews and reviewing questionnaires. "The animals are always our first priority and we want to make sure each one of them is going to a loving family that can care well for them. We pride ourselves on our ability to make successful matches," continues Voigt.

All dogs and cats ar e vaccinated, microchipped, health-checked and spay/neutered. Dogs are temperament-tested and most dog adoptions come with a six-week obedience training course. All dogs and cats 13 years of age and under will receive one month of free pet insurance. Potential adopters can preview adoptable animals at the Seattle Humane website and download a pre-adoption questionnaire.

Seattle Humane is located at 13212 SE Eastgate Way in Bellevue (near the junction of I-90 and I-405), and is open from 11am to 8pm Friday - Saturday and 11am to 6pm on Sunday.

Please note that collars, leashes and pet carriers are not provided. You can bring your own or purchase these items at Seattle Humane, with proceeds benefiting the animals in SM's care.

King5: Humpbacks off Richmond Beach

Wednesday, September 23, 2015

Photographer Stu Davidson said two Humpbacks offshore from Richmond Beach stayed close to each other and did repeated long dives (20-30 minutes each), with short stays on the surface.

Humpbacks, orcas, deep water sharks and octopi... Note to self: must stop thinking of Puget Sound as a pond.

Owner of dog who bit Shoreline boy has been located

Wednesday, September 2, 2015

Thanks to a tip from a citizen, Edmonds police have identified the owner of the dog who attacked a 6-year-old Shoreline boy in the “no dogs” area of Brackett’s Landing Park in Edmonds on Aug. 19. The owner did not identify himself and left the scene with the dog immediately after the incident.

Fortunately the boy’s mother was taking video on her cell phone at the time of the attack. Edmonds Police circulated screen shots from the video to My Edmonds News and others (See previous article) in an attempt to locate the dog and its owner.

“The child was taken to Swedish/Edmonds for treatment of puncture wounds around his mouth, chin and arm,” said Edmonds Police spokesperson Sgt. Shane Hawley. “He was taken home from the ER with no hospital stay, and is doing well.”
“We received several tips from the public.  One of them panned out and led us to the suspect,” Hawley said.

According to Hawley, the owner is a 40-year-old man from Edmonds, and the dog, a female pit bull mix, is unlicensed. The incident occurred in the beach area north of the restrooms and below Sunset Avenue, which is posted “no dogs.” The owner has been charged with two animal control violations: 1) having a dog in a no dogs allowed area, and 2) no animal license.

Hawley explained that no criminal charges can be brought against the owner because a dog bite is not considered an assault under state law. This also means there is no criminal violation for leaving the scene of the incident.

However, Edmonds City Code calls for animals involved in bite incidents to be quarantined for 10 days, with the quarantine period starting at the time of the bite. Quarantine does not necessarily have to be at a kennel.  The dog can be placed on quarantine at the owners home. But in this case, by the time the dog and owner were found, the 10-day period was already over.

“We checked with the animal’s vet and the dog was current on shots and in good health, posing no health risk to the boy,” Hawley said.   “We also served the owner with a potentially dangerous dog declaration.”

Dangerous dog declarations are part of the Edmonds Quarantine Statute (EMC5.05.040), and require that the pet owner take extra measures including the purchase of extended liability coverage and building enhanced enclosures.

The Beaver is safe at Brookside Elementary

Thursday, June 25, 2015

Maintenance crews had set out traps at Brookside Elementary in Lake Forest Park for a beaver who was - surprise! - building a dam across a tributary of McAleer Creek near the school.

Mothers and children protested, City Hall was lobbied (it wasn't their doing), and Lake Forest Park police tried to stay aloof while maintaining their position of enforcing laws, after someone kept springing the traps.

The School District called off the maintenance crews and will examine other options for keeping the school grounds from flooding.

Eric Lacitis wrote an article in The Seattle Times which is worth the read.

(If anyone has a photo of one of our local beavers, please share it with us!)

Dogs don't wear shoes

By Diane Hettrick

My in box (and Facebook) are full of warnings to dog owners - don't leave your dog in the car! I'm not sure why people have to be told, but apparently they have to be told not to leave babies in cars, either.

It doesn't take heat as extreme as what we have now to be too hot for dogs. A closed up car can reach 120 degrees in a very short period of time, and cracking a window doesn't really do much.

Here's an example: when the weather first started getting warm a couple of weeks ago, my car had been parked in the sun all day. The steering wheel was so hot that I wore gloves to drive. I had an appointment at 4pm. When I came back to the car at 5pm, my empty Soda Stream bottle, which had been in the car an hour, had melted. The neck is now pointing sideways. Those things are hard plastic.

And it's much hotter this week.

Another warning for dog owners. Trying putting your hand on the pavement before you walk your dog. One of our readers checked the temperature of the sidewalk in front of her house and it was 130 degrees. Dogs don't wear shoes. Their pads are making direct contact with 130 degree cement.

Cats have problems too. They won't walk on surfaces that are too hot, but they can sunburn their ears. Cats with light colored ears are particularly vulnerable. My vet says that the only solution to a bad sunburn is to amputate the burned parts of the ears.

King County animal control officers will be out on regular patrols, and will respond to resident calls about animals in distress due to the heat. Call 9-1-1 or 206-296-PETS (7387) if you see a pet in a hot car, or an animal that lacks access to fresh water and shade. For more tips, visit the Summer Pet Safety Tips webpage.

At PAWS Wildlife Center they are busy rehabilitating their first Harbor Seal pup of the season.

Do you know what to do if you come across a lone pup on one of our beaches? For their safety and yours, do not touch!
The mother leaves the pup high in the sand, while she goes out to hunt. The pup is fine, as long as people leave it alone.

Sunday, July 20, 2014

The Seattle Humane Society and Safeway have teamed up for a Summer Pet Food Drive to help fill the shelves of Seattle Humane's Pet Food Bank, which feeds pets belonging to low-income seniors and people disabled by AIDS.

Look for collection barrels in your local King County Safeway store throughout July. Pick up a few extra cans of pet food or a bag of dry pet food and drop them in! The greatest needs are dry cat food and wet canned dog food.

Ways you can help!

1.  Donate canned or dry pet food at your local King County Safeway store in July. Our greatest needs are dry cat food and wet canned dog food.

 2.  Make it a team effort by holding a pet food drive in your community at your church, synagogue, school or business.

3.  Spread the word: text, blog, wall post and tweet today!

Seattle Humane's volunteers pack, load and deliver pet food to local senior centers, low-income housing complexes, food banks and individual homes. Help Seattle Humane help pets, and people too, by donating to the Safeway Summer Pet Food Drive.

PAWS’ “Pet Safety Day” To Help Owners Keep Animals Safe

Monday, May 5, 2014

Trainings, Microchipping and Licensing Offered at May 17 Event

Pet Safety Awareness Day, Saturday, May 17, 2014, 11am – 2pm at PAWS, 15305 44th Ave W, Lynnwood, WA 98087.

Designed to educate pet owners of all ages, PAWS’ Pet Safety Awareness Day (May 17, 11-2pm) will be a fun and interactive event that aims to give dog and cat owners across Snohomish and King Counties practical advice and solutions for keeping their animals safe. The event is sponsored by Northpointe Animal Hospital.

Alongside demonstrations in cat leash training, and instructions on how to set up humane traps to help reunite lost cats with their families, animal guardians will be able to get their cats and dogs microchipped at a low cost, purchase an identification tag to help get them reunited should they become lost, and buy a city pet license.  There will be lots of information to take away on themes of animal safety, as well as animal care professionals on hand to answer questions.

Kay Joubert, Director of Companion Animal Services at PAWS, said: “We hope this free event will raise awareness of a crucial aspect of responsible pet ownership, and contribute to a reduction in the number of strays without licenses and identification. By educating members of the public through such initiatives, we can get stray animals reunited with their families before they ever cross a shelter’s threshold.”

The PAWS Pet Safety Day is free and open to the public and will be held at PAWS’ main campus in Lynnwood. For more information, call 425-787-2500 ext. 801 or visit the PAWS website.

PAWS is a champion for animals—rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife, sheltering and adopting homeless cats and dogs, and educating people to make a better world for animals and people.

PAWS reaches out a paw to shelter without heat

Thursday, December 12, 2013

Three weeks old and frostbitten
PAWS Companion Animal Shelter in Lynnwood gave a warm reception Wednesday to some very chilly canines.

The twelve animals came from Adams County Pet Rescue in Othello, Washington. The Pet Rescue, experiencing delays in finishing their new facility, is completely without heat.

“Every animal we have is outside right now,” says Pet Rescue shelter staffer Laurie Sheriff.
“It’s so cold.  It’s been no higher than two degrees at the most.” Sheriff commented. “We have three, maybe four kennels inside our building, but even so, there’s still no heat and it’s just too cold to assure the animals’ safety and comfort.”

So the rescue reached out to PAWS for help. At least twelve dogs needed immediate assistance and had nowhere to turn. “PAWS has been great,” says Sheriff. “They’ve literally been a lifesaver.”

Only two puppies survived the cold
The dogs were transported on Monday. Two of the dogs are only three weeks old and both are suffering from frostbite. But that’s not the result of the cold kennels. The puppies were found just a few days ago with their mother, who was tied to a tree in below-freezing conditions. Five of her puppies had already died from the cold when the remaining two were brought to Adams County Pet Rescue and then included in the group of dogs being transported to PAWS.

“Other than the frostbite, the puppies appear to be in good health,” says Kay Joubert, Director of PAWS Companion Animal Shelter.
“We’ll continue to bottle feed them, and tend to the frostbite, but they’ll make it through this.”

The rest of the transferred animals are in fine condition, according to Joubert, and will be available for adoption shortly.

PAWS provides shelter services for both Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.
