Diggin' Shoreline's Annual Plant Sale Saturday at the Senior Center on 185th

Thursday, May 18, 2023

Diggin’ Shoreline's Annual Plant Sale
Saturday, May 20, 10 AM - 4 PM

Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center
South end parking lot on 185th NE

We'll have veggies, pollinators, perennials, and natives, and the fine country / bluegrass / rock sounds of a great local band, Hokum Creak!

Everyone knows that plants love music. So do gardeners! You can get both and dance with your friends, too, at our annual Plant Sale fundraiser.

Of course, you can dance with your plants. too. We won't think that's weird at all. What better way to enjoy a fine spring day!

10% of our proceeds benefit the Shoreline Senior Center. We thank them for their partnership.

Your generous support of this, our only fundraiser, helps sustain our work in the community. Checks, debit, or credit cards preferred, but cash works, too.

The Lake City Community Center, 12531 28th Ave NE, Seattle, has been declared a total loss from this week's fire. (See previous article)

The many programs that used the building have to find new locations.

The Lake City Seniors food program has been offered space at the Lamb of God Lutheran Church for the foreseeable future for meal distribution and some community services on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

While most of the Senior Center programs and activities are cancelled until at least next week as they plan next steps, they will be able to provide the Senior Meal Program with their partner, Hunger Intervention Program.

The Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Senior Center has reached out to them to offer help.

Small (and large!) gestures provide endless enjoyment - donations to Senior Center during the pandemic

Saturday, April 8, 2023

By Theresa LaCroix, Executive Director
Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Senior Center

It seems so long ago that we were completely shut in from our families, neighbors and friends due to the high level of risk associated with the COVID pandemic.

While the world hunkered down, Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Activity Center was in full swing, providing what is termed Direct Emergency Services. This included services such daily meals home delivered, groceries donated to those housebound (lack of bus service), and a host of additional tasks as needed.

A serious concern that quickly became apparent to us was the negative effects of Social Isolation that we were all experiencing. For seniors who no longer have family members in the community, or they have passed away due to age, life became very mundane and lonely.

We are very appreciative to those who donated magazines and puzzles for us to share with those most isolated.

Ms GM Wiegand donated 1,000 disks of movies and TV shows to the Senior Center

One individual who truly made a difference was Shoreline resident Ms GM Wiegand, as she, along with her daughter, gathered her collection of DVD discs, catalogued each one and delivered them to the senior center.

In all, we received 476 DVDs, which provided a wide variety of interests from collections of Turner Classics and TV series such as Lucille Ball, to current day movies/TV series such as Sex in the City, and Planet Earth. Our library was filled with artists such as Sidney Poitier, Frank Sinatra, Robert DeNiro, Robert Redford, Gene Kelly, Bette Midler, Sissy Spacek and many more that we all know and love.

In addition there were boxed sets of television series, including the entire Star Trek universe, bringing the total donation to over a thousand disks.

Each week, we were able to choose 3-4 videos and deliver them to the homes of isolated seniors, providing them some lighthearted entertainment for the week.

The following week, we would exchange them for new videos, always sending a variety of interests. As we have moved past the pandemic, we continue to loan out the videos, providing affordable free entertainment for those on budgets.

We are most grateful for Ms. Wiegand's donation for the laughter, joy, tears, and pure enjoyment she brought into our homes.

How the Senior Activity Center is funded

For two years, with the help of the National Guard, our Senior Center prepared nutritious meals and delivered them to seniors in the north end, whether they were SC members or not.

By Theresa LaCroix, Executive Director
Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Senior Activity Center

We frequently hear from our membership, that they believe the senior center is financed 100% by either Sound Generations or the City of Shoreline.

Neither is accurate! We are an independent non-profit, with staff raising over $600,000/year, through various means.

The Senior Center packed bags of groceries which were delivered to Seniors during the pandemic.

We are deeply grateful to our cities for the financial assistance they provide each year, accounting for 1/6 of our total costs.

As for Sound Generations, we partner with them to provide us a financial credit line throughout the year (we pay off in December), and we contract with them for back-office services, such as IT, Human Resources, and grant tracking.

They bill us for these services as any business would.

The Annual Community Breakfast scheduled for October 13, 2022 has been postponed but in the meantime you may donate on our webpage at www.shorelinelfpseniorcenter.org

Donations can also be sent to the senior center via credit/debit over phone, by mail or online.

Thank you for your support for the work that we do, the programs and the services provided. Help us to continue bringing quality programs, outstanding instructors, and informative events to our community.
