Moving Through Cancer - a beginning exercise class for cancer survivors

A new class is being offered at the Shoreline - LFP Senior Center:

MOVING THROUGH CANCER Instructor: Toshiko Aramaki

This class is designed for cancer survivors. Participants are people who have completed their cancer treatment, have never taken exercise before and have a hard time starting exercise. 

This class will change your idea of exercise and show you what to do and what to avoid to help you become more active each day.

Toshiko is a certified Cancer Exercise Trainer from ACSM (American College of of Sports Medicine). She has been teaching exercise to cancer survivors for almost 14 years.

Day: Monday 
Time: 1:00 to 2pm 
Cost: FREE

Day: Wednesday 
Time: 10am to 11am 
Location: on ZOOM ONLY

Before you sign up for the class, you need to speak with Toshiko. Please call the Center at 206-365-1536 to leave your name and phone number. Toshiko will call you to discuss the class.

In order to participate in this class, you need to:
  • be familiar with Zoom
  • get a medical release from your doctor
  • sign a liability release from Shoreline Lake Forest Park Senior Center
  • send all these forms by mail or Email to a specific address

“Nick has been working in the computer industry for the past two decades. He recently graduated from the University of Washington and enjoys assisting people with technology-based issues. 
"Nick is excited to be instructing members of the Senior Center in the uses of today’s technology!”

 

Love your iPhone/iPad but is it driving you crazy? 

Bring your phone/iPad, fully charged with a list of the features you want to use on your device and any questions you have about particular phone functions. Participants help determine the class content.

New ESL class starts August 2, 2022 at the Shoreline Senior Activity Center

We are excited to announce a NEW ESL class starting at the Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Senior Activity Center starting August 2nd.

Led by two experienced ESL teachers, the sessions are on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. There is no charge to attend this class.

This class will practice the English sound system for pronunciation, words and reading with grammar and vocabulary. It will also focus on simple sentence structure.

Get a delicious dinner at the Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Senior Center and you don’t even have to get out of your car.

This is a drive through and pick up event.

$10 includes spaghetti, Caesar salad, garlic bread and a brownie.

We will be having social distancing procedures in place.

It will be on a first come, first serve basis and we will only be accepting Cash or Checks.

Senior Center Holiday Bazaar accepting vendor applications

Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Senior Center is now accepting applications from makers of handmade goods to become a vendor at the Holiday Bazaar.

The Annual Holiday Bazaar at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center will be held Friday, October 21st and Saturday, October 22nd, 2022; 10:00am to 4:00pm both days.

This event is a Shoreline community tradition that delights people wanting to get an early start on unique gifts for their holiday shopping. 

In addition to the vendors, the Bazaar features a Silent Auction, Bake Sale, Raffle and Santa’s Shop.

Potential vendors must meet certain criteria in order for consideration:
  • All items must be handcrafted by the applicant and of good quality.
  • No commercial crafts or imports accepted.
  • A photo of your craft/work must accompany your table rental application if you have not been part of previous Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center Holiday Bazaar events.
  • All items must be new.
  • Applications must be received by July 31, 2022.

Volunteer position at Shoreline Farmers Market packing produce bags for seniors

Are you looking to give back to your community? We have a great opportunity for you!

The farmers market is seeking out four detail-oriented volunteers who can commit two hours of their time every Saturday morning (from June 10 - August 13). 

Volunteers will work together sorting vegetables and packing fresh produce bags for seniors in our community who have been identified by the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center and Northwest Neighbors Network.

These bags will be delivered to seniors in the community, providing fresh access to healthy and nutritious food. 

Sounds great right? This is a chance to be outside in the fresh air, meet new people, and give back to others!

Dr. John Hibbs, Shoreline-LFP Senior Center’s former site supervisor for Bastyr Naturopathic Medical Clinic at the Center, returns this spring with two outstanding Dahlia events.

Dr. Hibbs - or Dr. Dahlia as we like to call him - will host an online FREE webinar to help guide you on spring planting on Thursday, May 5, 2022 at 2:00pm.

Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Senior Center announces new Social Worker

Jill Bieler is a licensed Social Worker who has a Master of Social Work degree and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Aging Studies.

Jill is available for free, confidential consultations to:
  • Provide advocacy and referrals for seniors to community resources for concerns related to housing, food assistance, transportation, financial, legal and mental health issues.
  • Offer emotional support and short-term counseling to seniors and their families for issues related to aging, grief and loss, adjustment to illness and caregiving.
  • Assist with applications to community agencies for services, including senior housing, utility discount programs and public benefits.

Jill is available on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays by phone and in-person by appointment.

Each month on the 4th Tuesday at 11am Kelsey Rauenhorst, a Sound Generations WeCare Advisor, will be presenting an educational overview of Medicare options.

Following the presentation, Kelsey will be available for one-on-one appointments to answer specific questions or assist with enrollments.

She is an employee of Sound Generations, so all commissions go directly to help fund the work being done for older adults in King County.

ESL classes available at the Senior Center

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center is offering a weekly English as a Second Language class. 

This is an informal one-hour class for those who’d like to improve their ESL skills, and is offered free of charge. 

Teachers Tessa and Doug Machle have many years of experience and make class sessions fun and varied. 

Focus is on conversation and listening skills, with vocabulary and grammar as needed. 

All levels of ESL are welcome! 

The class is held every Tuesday morning at the Senior Center, from 10 - 11am. All participants are required to be fully vaccinated and boosted (proof of vaccination must be provided). 

We wear masks and keep a safe distance during all class sessions.

Fudge makes a great gift - available Monday and Tuesday at the Senior Center

If you can't figure out what to get someone for Christmas, a box of fudge is a welcome gift. The Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Senior Center will be selling half pound boxes of fudge on Monday and Tuesday at their building south of the Shoreline Center complex.

The official address is 18560 1st Ave NE. The building and the south parking lot face NE 185th.

Monday, December 20 and Tuesday, December 21, 2021 from 8:30am to 4:30pm. You can go in to the building (wearing a mask) or you can have your order delivered to your car by calling the Center at 206-365-1536 for ordering and payment.

Three flavors are available: Classic, Walnut and Peppermint.

Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Senior Center is hosting the 1st Annual Holiday Fudge Sale as a fundraiser.

Three flavors are available: Classic, Walnut and Peppermint - packaged in half-pound white gift boxes.

You can swing by the Senior Center and pick up your fudge during these hours 8:30am to 4:30pm except as noted for Friday, which is 8:30am to 1pm:
  • Thursday the 16th
  • Friday the 17th - 8:30am to 1pm
  • Monday the 20th
  • Tuesday the 21st
You can also have your order delivered to your car by calling the Center at 206-365-1536 for ordering and payment.
