Recruiting middle and high school students for Letter to Elders

Friday, September 4, 2020

Opportunity for youth to connect
with Senior Citizens through the
written word.

The past 6 months has created tremendous challenges for our aging population as most services and programs moved to online access.

The reality is that many seniors do not have access to computers and those that do, are not all at the technological level to download programs such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom.

This transfers to cell phone use as well as FaceTime and similar programs remain a mystery to a population that is more comfortable with developing their relationships in person, through US Postal mail and accessing entertainment through television, not internet.

Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center is busy developing means of reaching seniors in their homes, to reduce the ill effects that social isolation has created.

With this in mind, we are most fortunate to have two students, brother and sister team of Ishan and Ishita Bansal, step forward and create an amazing new program called Letter to Elders

Ishan and Ishita have developed a registration process for middle and high school students to apply to become pen pals to seniors in our community. In one week, they have acquired nine participants, eagerly awaiting their assigned individual that will be provided through the senior center.

The following is the recruitment ad that Ishan shared with classmates returning to school:

“Do you want to give back to the community but only have time to offer? Do you want to help support and bring joy to the senior community?
"As the global pandemic continues, there are seniors across the country without loved ones to call and cannot visit them in these conditions.
"For these seniors, isolation is just as hard and is becoming a growing problem. Letters to Elders is an organization connecting these seniors with youth across the area, building connections and ending isolation one letter at a time.
"Volunteers get to intimately connect with seniors, learn new things, and earn service hours, all through a traditional pen pal program (either letter or email).”

If you know of a student that would like to participate, have them contact Ishan and Ishita directly or register HERE or contact us at lettertoelders@gmail.com

If you know an adult that would benefit from a new friendship, one in which regular letters will be exchanged, have them contact the senior center at 206-365-1536. All contact will be via US Postal Service only, no in-person visits and students are mandated to refrain from sharing any contact information.

Senior Center needs volunteers to be To-Go Lunch Delivery people

Thursday, September 3, 2020

Each day Monday through Friday our delivery volunteers arrive at the Senior Center at 10:45am with their masks on.

We check you in at our door and take your temperature to make sure no one has a fever. There are specific Food Handling and Covid19 protocols -we will train you

The hot lunches are brought to the lobby on carts and the delivery people take the carts out to our shuttle and load then on the van (around 10:50)

Each delivery volunteer receives a list of who is getting a meal today and the driver will follow the delivery list.

When you arrive at the recipient’s home you would take the meal at their door and hand it to the recipient.

Delivery is usually done by 12:30pm and you return to the Senior Center before 1pm.

On Fridays we have two people on each shuttle to deliver because we give each person their Friday meal and a grocery bag of food for the weekend.

Sound interesting? Give Donna at the Shoreline / Lake Forest Park Senior Center at 206-365-1536. The best time to call is between 1-3pm.

Senior Center: Staying cool during the heat wave

Tuesday, August 18, 2020

BASIC STEPS for STAYING COOL DURING THE HEATWAVE

In past years, Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center has been a drop-in for those needing to escape the heat of their homes during extremely warm weather during the summer months.

Unfortunately, we are not able to open our doors for drop-in visits as we operate rigid health guidelines to protect the integrity of all of our current nutrition programs and services.

However, we encourage you to incorporate some of the tips listed below as you battle the heat.

We also ask that you be mindful of your senior neighbors. If you do not see activity around their homes during this time, please check on them and share how you stay cool. Many homes in Shoreline do not have central air and can heat up into the 90s.

  • Turn on fans
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Stay in the coolest part of their home
  • Go to a nearby park and sit under a shade tree if they are ambulatory
  • Do not overexert yourself with household chores, exercise regimes, etc.
  • Take shorter walks with your dog, he/she will be fine as they are hot as well
  • Reduce intake of hot beverages, including coffee (add ice if you must have your cup a day)
  • Close blinds during the day

Some things you can do to help out a neighbor in coping with the heat:
  • Loan them a fan
  • Drop a case of water at their doorstep with a note listing your name and phone number
  • Drop off a bag of ice
  • Offer to walk their dog for them; be sure to provide them your name and phone number
  • Offer to drive them to the grocery store and carry their packages for them
  • If you have concerns about a neighbor, knock on their door but have a sign that they can read through the window, that states your name, address and phone number and simply say “Are you OK?”
Strangers at doorsteps can be very intimidating but a sign allows them to take whatever precautions they have a need to do, before opening the door to a stranger.

Rod Dembowski and The EastWest Food Rescue

Saturday, May 30, 2020

Rod and Kenmore Mayor David Baker on last Friday’s EastWest Food Rescue trip to Othello
Photo courtesy office of Rod Dembowski

From King county councilmember Rod Dembowski

In late April, Bothell community member George Ahearn learned that farmers in his Eastern Washington hometown of Othello were prepared to destroy crops that they were unable to distribute because of the pandemic.

George knew so many of his neighbors in King County were struggling and could use help, so he alerted community members and within days EastWest Food Rescue came together to save produce and deliver it to those in need.

In less than a month since its inception, the EastWest Food Rescue has saved and delivered over 300 tons of produce, serving 70 thousand households in need.

Last Friday I joined a crew of volunteers, including Kenmore Mayor David Baker and Woodinville Mayor Elaine Cook, on the now weekly food rescue mission to Othello. The convoy included three trucks from King County, and trucks from private businesses as well.

Volunteers bagging potatoes

It was a spirit-lifting day of volunteering and I enjoyed the opportunity to drive 10,000 pounds of beautiful Washington red onions from Othello back to King County. We topped off supplies at the Northshore senior center that day.
------

The previous week, Dembowski personally delivered 600 pounds of onions and potatoes to the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Senior Center (see article)

If you’d like to learn more or volunteer for the EastWest Food Rescue, please visit their website or Facebook page.
