Alpacas and cheesecake at Lake Forest Park Farmers Market Sunday

Sunday, October 7, 2012

By Teri Howatt

Alpacas at the Market
It's hard to resist their sweet faces and gentle spirits -- the alpacas are back this Sunday! And Pam Wilmot will have an irresistible selection of yarns and rovings for knitters, spinners, and felters.

It's the time of year when you can shop for pumpkins, squash, potatoes, braising greens and root veggies at the same time you'll find heirloom tomatoes, salad greens, pluots, pears and stone fruit. Try a different type of apple this week, stock up on jams, honey, coffee and tea.

Sweet Asylum Cheesecake
This week is the last day to get Sweet Asylum Cheesecake at our Market this season. But they'll be back at both Holiday Indoor Markets: the weekend before Thanksgiving and mid-December. This Sunday, feast on:

  • Pumpkin
  • Death by Chocolate
  • Coconut Mango
  • Salted Caramel
  • New York
The Friends of the Third Place Commons Farmers Market is held on the lower level of the LFP Town Center shopping area, at 17171 Bothell Way NE. From Shoreline, both Ballinger Way (mind the speed limit!) and 145th go directly to Bothell Way.

Market hours are 11am to 4pm.

Lake Forest Park, Washington Police Chief, Dennis Peterson announces his retirement

Saturday, September 22, 2012

Police Chief Dennis Peterson announced his retirement effective January 6, 2013.

“It has been an amazing 12 years with the department and the wonderful people that have dedicated themselves to serve the City of Lake Forest Park,” said Chief Peterson in his retirement announcement.   “I have been blessed to be a part of a great city and department. It has been my honor and privilege to be able to serve our community.”

In announcing his retirement to staff, Chief Peterson said,

“I want to thank the Mayor for her direction and continued support for the police department and City. She has been a pleasure to work with. I am very impressed with how she hit the ground running, wanting the best for the City. I wish her well with the future of the City.”

Shoreline Area News Photo
Chief Dennis Peterson has been the Police Chief of Lake Forest Park for over 12 years.  He was hired in 2000 by then Mayor David Hutchinson.  During Chief Peterson’s tenure, the Lake Forest Park Police Department has improved its professional training, formed interdepartmental alliances with other police departments and helped form the Coalition of Small Cities that provides a major crimes task force, interagency training that has reduced cost to the city’s budget. Most recently, Chief Peterson led the police department to department accreditation by the Washington Chiefs and Sheriffs Association. The police department follows best industry practice and standards in law enforcement.

“Police Chief Dennis Peterson is not only a professional manager, and true team player, he has also earned the admiration and respect of our citizens.  He is well-respected within his department, within the City, and among other police departments throughout the region” said Mayor Mary Jane Goss.  “He has been a true leader, transforming our City’s police department into a highly professional department, with low turnover, and known for its trained professionals and excellent customer service.”
“The City Council and I want to express our appreciation to Chief Peterson for his outstanding service to the citizens of Lake Forest Park for the past 12 years.” added Mayor Goss. “Police Chief Dennis Peterson has set a standard of excellence in our City government and made a real difference here.  We want to recognize, and are all extremely grateful for, his dedicated service to the City.”

Following Chief Peterson’s announcement, Mayor Goss announced that City Administrator Pete Rose will be directing the recruitment for a new Police Chief which will begin immediately.

Lake Forest Park is a three and half square mile residential community bordered by Seattle to the south, the Snohomish County line to the north, with Lake Washington and Kenmore to the east, and Shoreline to the west.  Less than 4% of the city land is zoned commercial; most of that is in one location, and there are no industrial areas. The City's population grew 210% in the 1990's, largely as a result of annexations.  Today, Lake Forest Park’s population is just over 12,500.

Lake Forest Park utilizes the Mayor/Council form of government (strong mayor) and provides a wide range of government services.  The Executive Department is led by Mayor Mary Jane Goss, who started her first term as Mayor January 1, 2012. Lake Forest Park is a full service city with 8 departments, 54 full time employees and a $7.3 million operating budget.

Lake Forest Park man sentenced for $4M in bogus insurance charges

Saturday, August 25, 2012

From our news partner, The Seattle Times

"A surgical technologist (Kenneth R. Welling, 45, of Lake Forest Park) claimed a gambling addiction led him to bill insurance companies for more than $4 million in bogus charges, sometimes falsely claiming to be a doctor, was sentenced Friday to one year in jail.
"But Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Hamilton said Welling deserved to spend some time behind bars because his crimes were serious and had gone undetected for nearly a decade.
"In meting out the yearlong jail sentence, Superior Court Judge Carol Schapira acknowledged the destructive nature of addictions but said Welling's crimes were neither small errors nor were they isolated."

Lake Forest Park Council puts moratorium on Southern Gateway permits

Friday, August 24, 2012

Expressing a desire to see its planning process through to the end, the Lake Forest Park City Council passed a moratorium at its August 23 regular meeting on acceptance and processing of permits in much of its Southern Gateway sub-area.

In a presentation on the proposed action, City Attorney Bob Sterbank explained that moratorium is a tool available in land use law to allow a local government to temporarily place development “on hold” when there is concern that development pressure may interrupt the planning process and development of land use regulations to implement the plan. The action impacts approximately 15-20 acres.

Since the 4th quarter of 2011, the Lake Forest Park Planning Commission has been working with MAKERS Architecture and Design to develop a vision and land use plan for the area along the SR 522 southern entrance into the City. The types of things being considered are the interface with the existing neighborhood, public gathering options, green space, street standards, parking, and traffic circulation.

Councilmember Don Fiene also cited a long-standing discussion of increased retail opportunities and the need for variety of housing types and sizes to make it possible for Lake Forest Park citizens to stay in town when their housing needs change.

The Planning Commission, staff and consultants have developed a base plan and are in the environmental impact statement phase of the process. Once these phases are done, it will be reviewed by the public and City Council and, if approved by the City Council, moved to a final phase to develop land use regulations consistent with the new plan. The budget authorized $75,000 to support this process.
Councilmember John Wright noted, “We have made a substantial investment in time and money to get to this point. I would like to protect the end of the process.”

The moratorium was passed as an emergency ordinance and will last up to six months. The law requires a public hearing on it within 60 days and an adoption of findings by the City Council to explain the need for it. A public hearing was set for September 27, 2012, at 7:00 pm at the Lake Forest Park City Hall.

100 years of public education in Lake Forest Park

Saturday, August 18, 2012

Lake Forest Park Elementary about 1915

Lake Forest Park Elementary will celebrate its centennial with a celebration from 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8 at the school, 18500 37th Avenue N.E.

This school year marks the 100th anniversary of public education in Lake Forest Park. To accommodate the three children among the first families of Lake Forest Park between 1912 and 1913, the Lake Forest Park School District 181 was established and classes were held in the Hanson and Reid real estate office. The next year the developers of Lake Forest Park donated land for a school (see photo) on its present site and a bond election was held to raise the sum of $4,500 for the cost of construction of the building. Lake Forest Park became part of the Shoreline School District when it was created in 1944.

All present and former Lake Forest Park students, their families and the community are invited, said current Principal Aimee Miner, herself an alumna of the school.

The event will feature birthday cake and other food, a bouncy slide, face painting, music and games, and a classic car show.

There will be a room full of school memorabilia to share with everyone.  If you have photos or items you would be willing to share, contact Holly Fisher.

Donate your "lovingly used" musical instruments to LFP Rotary at the Sunday Farmers Market

Friday, July 6, 2012

Donate that "lovingly used" instrument, violin, clarinet, trombone, or other musical instrument in your attic or garage that isn't being used any longer.

Shoreline Schools Music4Life is a Rotary inspired program that enables low income students in the 5th and 6th grades to play an instrument they would not otherwise be able to.

To children learning to play a musical instrument, participation in a music program is a meaningful activity - not only is it fun but statistics show it helps build relationships that can last a lifetime as well as improving academic skills.

We thank you in advance for your thoughtful participation.

The Lake Forest Park Farmers' Market is located on the lower level of LFP Mall at 17171 Bothell Way NE, every Sunday during the summer from 11am to 4pm.

Lake Forest Park seeks applicants for the Environmental/Legacy Grant Program

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

Lake Forest Park Environmental Quality Commission (EQC) and Community Service Commission (CSC) encourage residents to apply for funding under the Commissions’ jointly-sponsored Environmental/Legacy Grant Program.

Lake Forest Park provides grants to individual property owners, groups of property owners or community organizations to encourage small-scale environmental improvements.

Grants reimburse a portion of expenses on projects in two categories:

  • Local ecosystem enhancement - restoration projects that return wetlands, streams, and lakeshore areas to more natural conditions. Ecosystem enhancement projects can be undertaken by individuals or groups.
  • Legacy Vision implementation - projects that contribute to the 100-Year Legacy Vision: healthy connections, natural drainage, healthy habitat, and people places. Legacy Vision projects must be group projects.

The program provides 50% reimbursement, up to $500, for projects carried out by individual property owners, and 50% reimbursement, up to $1500, for projects carried out by groups of property owners or community organizations. Some examples of projects eligible for funding include:

  • Creating a community garden
  • Creating a rain garden
  • Creating native buffers between lawns and wetlands, streams, or Lake Washington
  • Replacing lawns or non-native vegetation with native species
  • Other projects that meet Legacy guidelines.

Any Lake Forest Park landowner or community group is eligible to apply. Applications and more detailed information may be obtained from Aaron Halverson, Environmental Programs Manager, at City Hall. Applications are reviewed by members of the two Commissions, and selected projects are sent to the Mayor for funding. Reviews are conducted on a monthly basis; there is no deadline for applications.
