From the LFP Mayor: Clarification and apology

Friday, February 10, 2017

LFP Mayor Jeff Johnson
To the citizens of Lake Forest Park,

In my Mayor’s report at the City Council meeting last night, I spoke about heroin addiction problems in a way that compared it to an earlier citizens’ effort requesting the Council to strengthen its compassion, welcoming, diversity and inclusiveness policies.

The two are not connected and I apologize to the citizens and Council for doing so. I am a person with a big heart and want Lake Forest Park to be a city with a big heart. That heart spilled over in an inappropriate way and I hope all will forgive me.

Lake Forest Park was one of the first cities in the nation to sign the Charter for Compassion in 2012 and we are proud of that. I am sure the Council will find a good way to continue to emphasize our compassionate and inclusive nature in the Lake Forest Park way.

The heroin crisis hit very close to my family this week and it leaves me in grief. I cannot do enough giving and volunteer work to stop the destruction myself. It will take individuals, families, public and private health agencies, police, courts, schools, church communities, villages, cities, states, our nation and the world to overcome this opiate epidemic that reaches into every corner.

According to Centers for Disease Control statistics (through 2015), 91 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose (prescriptions and heroin). From 2000 through 2015, more than a half million died from all drug overdoses. Here in the Seattle area and elsewhere, it has created rampant homelessness, crime, poverty, addiction, and an incredible drain on public and private services.

It has to stop. Please join me in the huge community “lift” to overcome this.

Again, sorry.

Mayor Jeff Johnson

LFP Mayor Jeff Johnson Letter to the Community

Monday, March 21, 2016

There was a Lake Forest Park community meeting March 13 regarding pedestrian safety in the Sheridan Heights neighborhood. The following is a letter from Mayor Jeff Johnson of Lake Forest Park.

To: Concerned Citizens
From: Mayor Jeff Johnson
Date: March 19, 2016
Ref: Community Meeting

Thank you all for taking the time to attend a community meeting at City Hall last Sunday evening. It is extremely important to me to listen to concerns coming from our citizens. You all see first-hand the issues that need to be addressed, and I am interested in working with you to solve them. During the meeting, the Chief of Police presented information about the tragic fatality collision involving one of our own. My heart breaks for this family and our community. While the investigation is still ongoing, I urge us to all support the family through your thoughts and prayers.

As mentioned during the meeting, it is a priority of the City in the coming months to work on our Safe Streets Multi-Modal Transportation Plan. We will be taking a look at the entire city with regard to pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle safety concerns. It is our hope to develop a plan to begin to address the issues in an organized and systematic manner. We will surely rely on citizens like yourself to help guide us along the way.

In the short-term, I have directed the Chief to work with the City of Shoreline up in the Heights to conduct emphasis patrols, conduct a speed study on NE 160th, and to partner with other City Departments to determine if there are other mitigation strategies that can be employed as we develop a longer-term approach to pedestrian/traffic safety.

Also during the meeting, we discussed my philosophy regarding the Commissions here in Lake Forest Park. It is my intent to take a step back to re-evaluate each of the Commissions, their mission, and their purpose. Community involvement within the City is not going away, I am trying to determine the best and most efficient way to involve our citizens in problem solving. Over the coming months, there will be more on this topic communicated to the community.

Once again, thank you all for attending the meeting, I greatly appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Jeff Johnson, Mayor

LFP Mayor: Sharing information and perspective with citizens

Wednesday, March 2, 2016

Mayor Jeff Johnson
Lake Forest Park
By Jeff Johnson, Mayor of Lake Forest Park

During my mayoral campaign, we focused on how “Lake Forest Park is great city.” One appreciates just how true that is when they are elected Mayor.

This is my first term as Mayor, and I’m amazed at how much there is to learn about our City. Fortunately, I’m surrounded by an amazing staff of people who care so much about serving the people of LFP.

As I consider how to serve our citizens and what I can contribute to making this the best City possible, I realize that sharing information and perspective with our citizens is one of the most important things I can do. That’s what this column will be about.

The start of 2016 has been busy for Lake Forest Park. We’re putting the finishing touches on a massive culvert improvement project that involved rebuilding bridges, rerouting streams, adding sidewalks, and drastically diverting traffic; all of which will improve people’s ability to move about the city.

The project turned out to be a huge success, and there are a few thank you’s due. First, to Mayor Goss and the Council, I want to recognize their vision and perseverance to get this accomplished. As a City, we will look back on this project as a turning point for LFP.

I also want to thank the citizens of Lake Forest Park (especially those who lived along the affected streets), as well as our neighboring cities, for their incredible patience during the construction. As Mayor, and as a Council member before, I’ve heard a lot of comments on this project, and I was impressed with how upbeat everyone remained during the work. Thank you all!

While residents experienced some inconvenience, some of our local businesses were also negatively affected – most notably Swirl and Subway who, for months, were hidden down a long hallway of fences behind large construction equipment. Please include them both in your list of area businesses to visit.

With regard to area businesses, I’d like to welcome MOD Pizza to LFP. They’re doing a fantastic job integrating into our community. In fact, this Monday, March 7th, they’re going to give 20% of proceeds to local nonprofit, Shoreline Sports Foundation, an LFP-based organization.

Finally, I wanted to congratulate the Shorecrest Boys and Girls basketball teams on their trip to the State Tournament. Hope you can bring home some trophies.

There are many great things happening in our community, and I’m excited to be a part of it. I will keep you posted about all the amazing things happening right here in your neighborhood. Looking forward to chatting again soon.
