Dunn Gardens offers class in making salves and balms

Salves & Balms
Monday, August 26, 2024 @ 4pm - 5:30pm

Making herbal crafts is a fun and easy hobby to dive into. In this workshop, you will learn how to make herbal salves and balms, using commonly available garden herbs.

A few herbs we will be using include Calendula, Comfrey, and St. John's wort. Participants will leave with the tools to create their own herbal ointments, and become familiar with ways to incorporate them into their daily lives.

Class fee includes an herbal salve and lip balms to take home. We will also be serving a refreshing summer beverage.

Heidi Koonz has been a horticulturist at the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden for 21 years, and began her herbal studies around that same time, completing an herbal apprenticeship in 2002.

Since then, she has been avidly making herbal oils, tinctures, teas, balms, salves, and other herbal crafts, either for gifts, or to sell. She has also been teaching students these fun, and useful skills for over 10 years.

Saturday, May 11, 2024 @3pm
Cost: Members- $10 | Not-Yet-Members- $15

Come write, inspired by trees in spring glory on the beautiful grounds of Dunn Gardens. We will turn our attention to our green companions through listening to arboreal poems and engaging in practices to open our perception.

Time will be given to contemplate and write in response to a tree of your choice, with simple poetic forms to write into. We will end by celebrating together in honoring, through our words, the sensuous details and beauty of the trees that surround us.

To Be Among Trees, for seasoned or beginning writers alike, will take place in Dunn Gardens, a beautiful oasis in North Seattle with over 70 Heritage trees. We will meet outside (with access to bathrooms) and spend time writing in the gardens. A canopy will be provided in case of rain. A small break is included. Please bring a snack and drink for yourself.

Mary Oak is passionate about using writing as a way to honor our embeddedness within the living Earth. For over 20 years she has enjoyed leading students in awakening perception, sensuous engagement, and heart awareness in relation to the plant kingdom in Waldorf teacher training, through her home studio and in her Sacred Botany: Revisioning the Plant Kingdom classes at Antioch University.

Erythronium Stroll and Quilting Display at Dunn Gardens Sunday April 23, 2023

Tuesday, April 18, 2023

Sashiko quilting from Artistry of
Sisterhood at Dunn Gardens Sunday
Erythronium Stroll and Quilting Display
at Dunn Gardens
Sunday, April 23, 2023
from noon - 3pm
Cost: Members-$5
Not-Yet-Members-$10

Erythroniums, the fairy flower of the garden, will be on full display in all their delicate beauty. Meander the gardens on your own or with a docent to view these colorful blooms.

Joining us at the Stroll will be the fabulous group, Artistry of Sisterhood, exhibiting their Sashiko Quilting creations.

Sashiko is a very old hand sewing technique originating in Japan meaning "little stabs". It was originally reinforcement stitching for worn clothing referred to as Boro during the Edo Period (1603-1867).

From its practical beginnings, Boro evolved into beautiful surface embellishment for fabrics referred to as Sashiko. Contemporary Sashiko has evolved into a decorative art form used to embellish quilts, garments and accessories.

Artistry of Sisterhood incorporates Sashiko into their African-American quilts, creating a unique and colorful art form that you will not want to miss. This event will have timed entry options and you will receive a sign up link once you have purchased your tickets.

Guided Nature and Forest Therapy walk at Dunn Gardens Thursday April 20, 2023

Tuesday, April 11, 2023

Inspired by Shinrin-yoku, the Japanese practice of “Forest Bathing” supports health and happiness through guided immersion in forests and other environments.

It involves a sequence of invitations to slow down, allow the senses to open, and experience a different way of (re)connecting with yourself, others, and Dunn Gardens.

This walk is ideal for persons older than 12, and who are comfortable traveling on uneven, unpaved terrain; though with notice we can easily adapt the walk for those with more limited mobility (fatigue, uneven gait, use of walker, cane, wheelchair).

Event: Nature Therapy
Date: Thursday, April 20, 2023, 1-2:30pm
Price: Members-$50, Not-Yet-Members-$55

Please be sure to have:
  • Rain jacket or Sunscreen (maybe both in the PNW?!)
  • Warm layers; more than you think you need, as we will probably not be more physically active than a slow mosey. Consider bringing a hat, water bottle, thiiiick socks, etc.
  • Optional: you may want a sit pad, stool, or chair if you feel called to stop and sit, but are maybe not down for the ground"

A workshop on "Air Plant Art" will be held at Dunn Gardens on Thursday, March 16, 2023 from 1 - 2:30pm.

Cost: Members $40, Not-Yet-Members: $50

Air plants are cool! They seem almost otherworldly the way they can grow, well, just in air -- no soil at all required. Plus their leaves can look a bit like alien tentacles or like the appendages of an exotic sea creature.

Join our horticulture team for an afternoon of hands-on learning, as they guide you through creating your own Tillandsia display to take home. They're a bit different to grow than other house plants so you'll also learn a few tips for caring for air plants so you can enjoy them for years.

The program fee includes all materials and plants.

"Children's Storytime in Ed's Cottage"
at Dunn Gardens
Friday November 11, 2022 @ 10am-12pm

Looking for something to do with the kids on their day off? Come to storytime at Dunn Gardens. Two of our favorite local authors will read while parents can stroll The Gardens or listen to the stories. Light snacks will top off a fun morning.

Laura Kvasnosky is a Dunn Gardens docent as well as an award-winning author and illustrator of over 20 books for children.

Her book Little Wolf’s First Howling is illustrated with her sister Kate McGee. It debuted in Spring 2017 to starred reviews and won the Red Bud award and the Margaret Wise Brown honor for best picture book text. Laura will invite children to howl along as she reads Little Wolf's First Howling.

The Moon Bear, marks the literary debut of Seattle’s Public Radio host Steve Scher, who built a devoted audience at KUOW-FM by giving guests the space to present their ideas with nuance.

Scher brings similar sensitivity, and an ear for poetic language, to his newest project. Scher now writes on Whidbey Island, where he hears coyotes howling, watches bats flit across the starry sky, and listens to tree frogs serenading one another.

Stumpery Workshop at Dunn Gardens November 10, 2022

Stumpery Workshop
at Dunn Gardens
Thursday, November 10th @ 1-3pm

Learn how to create a nurse log planting that can be a charming beginning to your own stumpery. In this workshop, participants will create their own nurse log, using plants that naturally grow in woody debris in Pacific Northwest forests and woodlands.

Logs, stumps, and other partially broken down woody debris provide a natural growing environment for many of our PNW native plants.

Taught by our Dunn Gardens staff horticulturists, the workshop will begin with a short walk through the woodland gardens to look for some real world examples and inspiration.

Participants will then convene in the classroom for a planting demonstration, and afterwards create their own nurse logs choosing from a selection of plants that grow well in these conditions.

Everyone will get to take their creations home to be displayed in their own garden!

Pricing: Members: $85 | Not-Yet-Members: $100
