Fireworks illegal in Shoreline

As the 4th of July holiday approaches, it is important to remember that the sale, possession, use, or discharge of fireworks in the City of Shoreline is illegal. 

Fireworks pose a fire hazard to property and present a safety risk to those who use them. The record high temperatures this week mean our fire danger is even higher than normal. Fireworks can also cause significant distress to pets and individuals suffering from a variety of health conditions. 

We ask everyone to be respectful of their neighbors and abide by the fireworks ban.

The sale, use, or discharge of fireworks in violation of Shoreline Municipal Code 9.15 is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail and/or a fine in an amount not more than $1,000. Each occurrence is considered a separate violation. A third violation in any three-month period is a gross misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a fine in an amount not more than $5,000.

If you see or hear fireworks in your neighborhood, you may report offenders by calling 911 or the Police non-emergency line at 206-296-3311. If there is a fire or other emergency, please call 911. If you have an exact address of where individuals are launching fireworks, it makes it easier for police to address the issue.

It is important to remember that enforcing the no fireworks ban is difficult. Police must see an individual in the act or have enough evidence connecting an individual to launched fireworks to write a citation. 

Even with officers on duty, it is extremely difficult to determine where fireworks are coming from without a visual confirmation. That is why it is important for people calling to report fireworks to provide an address.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America, When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.--Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.


In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. Drivers expected to face extended waits for state ferries over holiday weekend

Travelers should plan ahead and prepare for long waits if driving onto a state ferry over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Several routes are operating on reduced schedules dependent on Washington State Ferries’ COVID Response Service Plan.

The busiest sailings will likely be in the westbound direction Thursday, July 2, then eastbound Sunday, July 5, as travelers return from their Independence Day getaways.

WSF’s current schedules are based on four pillars of service – ridership, crew availability, vessel availability and funding. 

With more than 100 high-risk employees unavailable due to the pandemic, one of those metrics, crewing, has been a challenge. Due to a lack of crew members needed to meet U.S. Coast Guard safety requirements, there have been further schedule reductions over the past few weekends.

“We might be forced to make future temporary adjustments because of lack of crew, but pledge to provide as much advance notice as we can,” said Amy Scarton, head of WSF. 
“I know how service changes can be frustrating, especially for communities that rely on us as a vital link to the mainland. I ask for your patience during this difficult time, when most counties remain under directives to travel for essential purposes only.”

Fireworks prohibited in Lake Forest Park


"Fourth of July is just a few days away.
"Please remember that fireworks are not allowed in Lake Forest Park!"

Fireworks have not been allowed anywhere close by for years - only a few blocks of unincorporated Snohomish county and even then the rules are very restrictive.

What's different this year is that all the local fireworks displays have been cancelled as well as the Gas Works Park display in Seattle.

State Fireworks Incident Data for 2019

Olympia - In 2019, the Washington State Fire Marshal's Office (SFMO) received 349 reports of fireworks-related incidents by hospitals, clinics, and fire agencies in Washington State.

Of the 349 reports received, there were 269 injuries and 80 fires.

Fireworks-related incidents most often occur on the Fourth of July.

Breakdown of incidents:
  • 269 injuries reported; up nearly 30% from the previous year.
  • 80 fires reported due to fireworks use, resulting in a loss of $564,900.
  • 98 injuries were caused by holding on to fireworks after lighting them.
  • 51 of the 80 fires were classified as wildland or vegetation.

They did not state how many of the 98 injuries "caused by holding onto fireworks" included lighting them inside a vehicle and dropping them.

ATF demonstrates human - illegal fireworks interactions



Photographer Steven H. Robinson attended an ATF demonstration in Seattle on Wednesday. The purpose of the demonstration was to illustrate what happens to the human body when it is too close to various illegal fireworks.

ATF’s Explosives Enforcement Officer Brennan Phillips provided demonstration of various illegal explosives (non-legal / non-safe and sane fireworks). 



The demonstration used plywood cutouts of humans to show the devastation which can be caused by such illegal items.

The demonstration started with flash poster items and proceeded up to mortar shells as used in authorized public displays that are licensed by state and federal agencies that you would see in your local public displays.



The photos show the explosion and the damage that inappropriate use can cause from different types of explosives.

Lyon Creek Park will be open to view fireworks July 4

For those of you interested in viewing the Log Boom Park fireworks from Lake Forest Park, the police department will be keeping Lyon Creek Park open for the event. 

Keep in mind there is limited space on the dock and there is NO Parking available on Beach Dr.

Parking is available in front of city hall which makes for a very short walk to the park.

While we humans might love loud and colorful explosions, our pets are much more sensitive to sound than we are. Unfortunately, the big gatherings, loud noises, and impressive fireworks that make this holiday a celebration for us can be frightening for our animals, causing them to panic. However, planning and precaution can ensure an enjoyable Fourth of July for everyone.

Pet Safety Tips for Independence Day:

• KEEP PETS INDOORS

Keep your pets in a safe, enclosed room with closed windows. If you’re having guests over, consider keeping pets in a room that’s off limits to others. Be sure to provide plenty of water and food.

• CREATE A CALMING ENVIRONMENT

Surround pets with their favorite toys and other familiar objects. Sometimes the smell of an article of your clothing can help comfort them. Play soothing music, and keep the room as quiet as possible by closing doors, windows, and blinds.

• KEEP AWAY FROM FIREWORKS

Even if your pet doesn’t seem obviously upset by fireworks, they can still cause harm. Avoid potential burns, injuries, or possible ingestion by keeping all pets away from fireworks.

• EXERCISE YOUR PET

Give your pet plenty of exercise in the morning. This will calm your pets and help them relax with the stress of loud noises around them.

• UPDATE IDENTIFICATION

The biggest risk of all during this holiday is that pets will get loose and become lost. Even if a pet is secured inside, the sound of fireworks can cause extreme panic – sometimes causing them to break through glass windows. 

Make sure your pets are microchipped and wearing identification tags. Call to confirm that both the microchip company and your pet's veterinarian have your current address and phone number(s) on file.

There's an advantage to having water on each side. You have the option of viewing fireworks shows from neighboring cities and towns.

We have two big nearby shows - or you can just find a nice vantage point to watch the shows over the water.

On Lake Washington, the City of Kenmore puts on a big party at Log Boom Park.

Fourth of July Fireworks Show - Kenmore

Watch the night sky light up and have a fun-filled Fourth of July! The Kenmore Fireworks Show presented by Frank Lumber blasts off at 10:00pm from the Log Boom Park pier 17415 61st Ave NE.

Prior to the fireworks show, join in the festivities with fun activities and food vendors from 7:30pm to 10:00pm. The event is free and all you need to bring is a blanket or chair!

This event draws a crowd and parking is limited. Make plans to bus, ride, or walk to Log Boom Park via the Burke-Gilman trail. As a reminder, personal fireworks are prohibited in Kenmore city limits.

‘Operation Dry Water’ targets boating under the influence July 5-7

The Washington State Parks Boating Program, safety advocates and law enforcement agencies are asking boaters to help keep everyone safe on the water by not consuming alcohol or marijuana while when operating a boat or paddlecraft.

As boaters prepare for the Fourth of July holiday, law enforcement agencies are preparing for Operation Dry Water — a nationally coordinated effort that focuses on boating-under-the-influence (BUI) awareness and enforcement. 


Boaters will notice an increase in patrols across Washington from July 5 through 7, as federal, state and local marine law enforcement will intensify efforts to detect and remove dangerous and impaired boaters from the waterways.

“Every year we see boating accidents and tragedies that could have been avoided by staying sober,” said Rob Sendak, State Parks Boating Law Administrator. 
“Boaters have a choice to choose safety first, and stay sober. At a minimum, they should designate a sober skipper.”

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, boating under the influence is the leading-known factor in fatal recreational boating accidents.

In Washington state, it is illegal to use any substance that impairs a person’s ability to operate a boat. The law applies to all boats, including kayaks, canoes, rowboats and inflatable fishing rafts. 

State law allows law enforcement officers to require suspected intoxicated boaters to submit to a breath or blood test. Refusing to submit to a test is a civil infraction with a maximum fine of $2,050. 

The penalty for operating a boat under the influence is a gross misdemeanor punishable by a maximum fine of $5,000 and 364 days in jail. Additionally, a BUI is considered a prior offense if there are later convictions for driving under the influence (DUI).

Operation Dry Water is a national awareness and enforcement campaign focused on reducing the number of alcohol-and drug-related boating accidents and fatalities. 

As part of the campaign, emphasis patrols are conducted annually near the Fourth of July, a holiday known for increased boating activities and use of alcohol, during which law enforcement sees an increase in the number of boating accidents and fatalities. 

The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) coordinates Operation Dry Water in partnership with the Coast Guard, safety educators and local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission administers the state’s Boating Program, which provides leadership in recreational boating safety and environmental education and outreach. 

The goal of the program is to reduce accidents and fatalities, increase stewardship of Washington waterways, and keep recreational boating a safe, accessible and enjoyable pastime.

Celebrate the 4th on the 3rd of July in Mountlake Terrace

The fourth consecutive Mountlake Terrace 3rd of July Stars and Stripes Celebration, sponsored by the Cheeseburger Babies Foundation, is planned for Wednesday, July 3rd from 3:00 to 11:00pm at Ballinger Park 23000 Lakeview Dr, Mountlake Terrace.

The City of Mountlake Terrace, Community Transit, and South County Fire provide support services and facilities for the event.

The celebration includes a variety of entertainment and hours of fun for all ages. The event kicks off at 3:00pm with family fun and games, pony rides, water walking balls, bouncy houses, food vendors, face painting, carnival games and booths from local businesses.

The stage area includes live music, a DJ, pie eating contest, gunny sack races, and introduction of local sponsors and officials. The evening’s grand finale includes two fireworks shows that will light up the skies with fabulous fireworks that begin at about 10:00pm over Lake Ballinger.

Senior Center restrooms will be open for the handicapped and portable toilets will be on site. Parking will be available at the former Creekside Church parking lot 7011 226th Pl SW, and the Community Transit Park and Ride lot 6001 236th St SW with shuttle service provided by Honor Care Adult Family Home and Mountlake Terrace Plaza.

Although personal fireworks are illegal in the city, the organization obtained a special events permit from the city to allow a fireworks display with a professional pyrotechnics company. The boat launch area will be closed. The spectator viewing area will be on the southeast hillside within the park and south of the Mountlake Terrace Senior/Community Center (Ballinger Clubhouse).

Strong attendance is expected so please plan ahead and be prepared for any weather conditions, low lighting conditions upon exit, and shuttle waiting time. Bring chairs and/or blankets to sit on. Drivers are encouraged to avoid this area as there may be congestion.

Cheeseburger Babies Foundation, the charitable arm of Red Onion Cafe and Seafood Bar, sponsors the event with many community partners. Over $15,000 has been raised from local area businesses.

Get the jump on Independence Day - why wait for the 4th of July? 

Sno-King International Folk Dance Club is throwing a dance party, ending with strawberries and ice cream. 


We will do dances from many lands, including partner, no-partner, and set dances. You don’t need to bring a partner.

Aside from parties, we also dance every Wednesday and Saturday, starting at 7:00pm, with a lesson at 7:30pm. Wednesday is all requests, and Saturday has a program of dances, with room for requests.

Donation: $8 non-members, $6 members. Yearly membership is only $15 ($25 for a family).

Personal fireworks illegal everywhere - fortunately lots of local shows

There are some very good reasons why personal fireworks are no longer legal anywhere near us.
  • People blow off their fingers
  • Stray fireworks catch things on fire
  • Explosions terrify dogs - who often run away
  • Explosions are a terrible reminder for the thousands of war veterans among us
Unfortunately, there will still be some who will explode fireworks in prohibited areas like ours.

For them, call the police.

Further, if you see someone selling or using fireworks, or find any unattended fireworks call 9-1-1. Lake Forest Park wants to know about every incident. King County Sheriff's Office has extra money for emphasis patrols.

Lake Forest Park residents - before you berate the police, keep in mind that the many hills and ravines bounce sound waves in such a way that it's difficult to tell the direction of an explosion.

Local fireworks shows - All the shows start between 10pm and 10:15pm.

We are fortunate to be close enough to see fireworks shows in neighboring towns. On the east side, Kenmore is having their big show at Logboom Park. The official vantage point in Lake Forest Park is the Lyon Creek Waterfront Preserve.

Just don't park on Beach Drive. Park by City Hall and walk across the street to the park.

I'm told you can see some fireworks from the Bellevue show or the Kirkland show across the lake.

On the west side, find a vantage point with a water view to the north and you should be able to see both Edmonds and Kingston fireworks.

Watch the night sky light up and have a fun-filled Fourth of July! The Kenmore Fireworks Show presented by Frank Lumber blasts off at 10:00pm from the Log Boom Park pier. Prior to the fireworks show, join in the festivities with fun activities and food vendors starting at 7:30pm. The event is free and all you need to bring is a blanket or chair!

An Edmonds Kind of 4th - Kick off your summer with Edmonds’ longest running celebration. For 111 years the Edmonds Chamber of Commerce has sponsored the annual all-day party to celebrate America’s birthday. Head up to Edmonds for a 5k, parade, food, entertainment, fireworks, and more! The all day celebration will kickoff at 10:00am.

Gasworks Park - Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Summer 4th 2018

This is the big show at Lake Union's Gasworks Park
Admission is free, but to guarantee the best views, reserved seating is available for purchase (seats are going fast).

Throughout the day, guests can enjoy food vendors, live entertainment and exhibit booths. For those 21+, quench your thirst in our beer and beverage gardens. Kids of all ages are invited to participate in the All-American Games featuring pie-eating contests, sack races and more!
