Personal fireworks are illegal where we live

Tuesday, July 2, 2013

Please note: personal fireworks are illegal where we live and everywhere else around us:
  • Lake Forest Park ($200 fine)
  • Shoreline
  • Kenmore
  • Mountlake Terrace
  • Edmonds
  • Seattle
And for all you scofflaws who are going to shoot off fireworks anyway, here are some rules:
  • Be Prepared—Have water nearby and put pets indoors
  • Be Safe—Only adults should light fireworks
  • Be Responsible—clean up fireworks debris
Do not call 911 if you hear fireworks. The lines need to be kept clear for the people who blow off their fingers and set their houses on fire!

If you live or find a viewing spot on the Puget Sound side of town, you will be able to see fireworks from both Kingston and Edmonds.

If you live or find a viewing spot on the Lake Washington side, you will be able to see fireworks from Log Boom Park, as well as from private groups in Sheridan Beach and possibly the Civic Club.

Protect your pets over the Fourth of July holiday

Friday, June 29, 2012

Regional Animal Services of King County offers tips to keep your furry friend safe

The Fourth of July is coming up soon, and already the booms, bangs, and pops of fireworks can be heard across King County. Every year around Independence Day, Regional Animal Services of King County (RASKC) takes in many pets that ran away after being frightened by fireworks, or just slipped out with the many holiday guests and gatherings occurring. Fortunately, there are steps every owner can take to reduce the risk of their pet running away, and increase the odds of being reunited if their pet does become lost.

·         Keep your pet secured indoors in the quietest room of your house while fireworks are audible. You can also try music or television as a distraction. Some pets will stay calmer when placed in a secure crate in a darkened, quiet room.

·         If your pet is normally kept outside, bring them inside or put them in the garage or basement while fireworks are going off.

·         Make sure your pet has at least two forms of identification. This can be a pet license and personalized tag, a license and a microchip, or all three (license, tag, and microchip). Pets with ID have a much greater chance of being returned to their owners.

·         Don’t assume that your pet won’t react just because you haven’t had problems in the past. Sometimes, pets become sensitive to loud noises later in life.

·         If your pet becomes lost, check in person at all local shelters, and check back often. It may take some time before spooked pets are brought to shelters.

·         Use free online services like Petfinder or PetHarbor to post “lost pet” notices, and, where possible, put up “lost pet” posters in the area where your pet went missing.

·         Leave your pet at home if you head out to a public fireworks display.

To assist owners who have lost pets, RASKC has joined with Missing Pet Partnership to train volunteers for the “Mission Reunite: Help and Hope for Lost Pets” program. Immediately after the holiday, volunteers will be deployed at the Pet Adoption Center in Kent to help owners looking for their stray pet. In addition, RASKC will keep its “Lost Pet Hotline” up to date. People who are looking for a missing pet can call 206-296-PETS (7387) and press “3” for a list of strays currently at the center.

Buy fireworks at licensed retail stands for your out of town parties

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

State Fire Marshal Charles Duffy is reminding Washingtonians that the purchase of fireworks over the internet is illegal.  In Washington State, fireworks must be purchased from a licensed retail fireworks stand during the legal sales period.  Orders for fireworks cannot be placed over the internet or posted on websites such as Craig’s List.  Residents should talk with family members and guests about the fireworks laws for their area.

Independence Day is a time to celebrate our freedoms.  Personal fireworks require personal responsibility.  Remember the three B’s of fireworks safety:
  • Be Prepared – Have water nearby and put pets indoors
  • Be Safe – Only adults should light fireworks
  • Be Responsible – Clean up fireworks debris
Fireworks are illegal in Lake Forest Park and Shoreline - no sales, distribution, or use.

Learn more at the fireworks safety website.

Fireworks shows at Kenmore, Edmonds, and Kingston

Sunday, July 3, 2011

There are three local fireworks shows that area residents can enjoy - some from the comfort of your own home.

The City of Kenmore is putting on a fireworks show at LogBoom Park at the head of Lake Washington, NE 175th St and 61st Ave. NE.  Start time 10 pm.

Many residents will be able to see the show from home, particularly along the lake in neighborhoods like Sheridan Beach and the NE part of Lake Forest Park, certainly from Uplake in Kenmore.

The City of Edmonds goes all out for the 4th of July, with parades, fun runs, and a fireworks show.
Thanks to Teresa at MyEdmondsNews, for the schedule.

Schedule of Events
Fun run: 11 a.m.
Children’s parade: 12:30 p.m.
Main parade: 1 p.m.
Edmonds Firefighters Waterball Competition at City Park, 3rd Ave. S. and Pine St. at 3 p.m.
Evening Entertainment: 7:30 p.m.
Fireworks (Civic Stadium 6th and Bell): 10 p.m.

She has posted a map of the parade route - it's a perfect small town parade, just like in the old movies.

As a bonus for Shoreline residents in the westside neighborhoods, the town of Kingston is putting on a fireworks show, so you will be able to see a sky full of fireworks from both Edmonds and Kingston.
The parks will be closed - anyone know any good vantage spots (other than friend's decks)?

4th of July - bans on personal fireworks

updated 7-3-2011 5:15pm
By Diane Hettrick

You may have noticed there are no fireworks stands around. You may have noticed the signs on the roads in Lake Forest Park. Here's the scoop: Fireworks are BANNED.

BANNED in Lake Forest Park
BANNED in Shoreline
BANNED in Edmonds
BANNED in Mountlake Terrace
BANNED in Kenmore
BANNED in Seattle
and probably BANNED in Woodway, but I didn't check.

LEGAL in Brier (bet that changes after everyone from LFP, SL, MLT, Edmonds and Kenmore goes there with their fireworks!)

The fire departments have been saying for years that they are tired of people blowing their fingers off. I think they would like to run regular shifts on the 4th, instead of having all hands on deck to be able to respond to multiple fires at the same time.

For those of you who are busy exploding things (yes, I hear you), know that the police departments have all stated they will aggressively pursue violators.

However, one ray of sparkler light for you. Lynnwood has fireworks stands and is allowing personal fireworks during certain hours. If you are interested, check out my friend Mike's article in LynnwoodToday.

For those of you scofflaws who plan to light noisy things on fire on your street corners and hand lighted sparklers to children who would not otherwise be allowed to play with fire - a personal plea to clean up after yourselves and not leave the debris all over the street.  My tires thank you!

However, there are community fireworks shows in Kenmore, Edmonds, and Kingston.  (See article).

Safe on the 4th - tips for people and pets

Saturday, July 2, 2011

Staying Safe on the 4th - our News Partner Michael, on the Seattle/LocalHealthGuide has published a list of tips from the American Red Cross.

Here are a couple of tips gleaned the police blotters:

1. Don't light fireworks inside the car.
2. Don't pick up an explosive device to see why it didn't go off after you lit it.

The Humane Society has the following suggestions for keeping your pet safe and sane through the 4th.

KEEP PETS INDOORS
Keep your pets in a safe, enclosed room, preferably one without windows. If you’re having guests over, consider keeping pets in a room that’s off-limits to guests, with plenty of water and food.

CREATE A CALMING ENVIRONMENT
Surround pets with their favorite toys and other familiar objects. Sometimes the smell of an article of clothing from your laundry can help comfort them. Play soothing music and keep the room as quiet as possible by closing doors, windows, and blinds.

KEEP AWAY FROM FIREWORKS
Even if your pet doesn’t seem obviously upset by fireworks, they can still cause harm to pets. Avoid potential burns, injuries, or possible ingestion by keeping all pets out of the vicinity of fireworks.

UPDATE IDENTIFICATION
The biggest risk of all this Independence Day is that pets will get loose and become lost. Even if a pet is secured inside, the sound of fireworks can cause them to enter an extreme panic mode – sometimes even breaking through glass windows! Make sure your pets are microchipped and wearing identification tags. Call to confirm that the pet’s veterinarian and the microchip company have your current address and phone numbers.

Family 4th of July at Gasworks Park on Lake Union

Gasworks Park at the head of Lake Union at 2101 N Northlake Way, is the only downtown fireworks show left in Seattle. Last year, it almost folded when One Reel Productions lost its corporate sponsor. Chef Tom Douglas (Dahlia Lounge, Etta's) challenged 97.3 radio host Dave Ross to raise money to put on the fireworks show and they raised the money in record time from local corporations and local citizens.  This year, the local funding and sponsorship continues.

One of those local companies was Bartell Drugs, which is sponsoring the Dusty 45s live performance before and after the fireworks. Founded in Seattle in 1890, Bartell Drugs owns and operates stores in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties. Family-owned and operated, it is the nation's oldest drugstore chain.
The Dusty 45s will light up the stage at Seattle's Gas Works Park from 8-9 pm with an encore set following the fireworks show. The group's high-energy, crowd-pleasing brand of Americana music has made them popular with fans of all ages.

Here's the schedule from the Family 4th webpage.

Family 4th at Lake Union this 4th of July at Gas Works Park features free activities, food and drink, and, of course, fireworks.

12:00 noon Gas Works Park opens, along with playfield and beer garden
7:59 PM Playfield closes
8:00 PM Dusty 45s live performance
9:45 PM Beer garden closes
10:10 PM The show begins!
10:35 PM Fireworks end
10:45 PM Dusty 45s encore performance
11:00 PM Gas Works Park closes

They suggest that you read their information page prior to joining them at Gas Works Park.

We want everyone to have the best holiday possible and the information on this website should help ensure this happens. If you can’t find an answer to your question, e-mail us and we will get back to you. Thank you Seattle! This event is truly yours!"

Take non-perishable food to donate to the Northwest Harvest food bank.

The Washington State Department of Transportation reminds you that a lot of people will be going to Gasworks Park.
If you are headed into Seattle on Monday, July 4, be prepared for heavy congestion on I-5 while folks migrate to Gasworks Park for the annual Family 4th Fireworks show. You also can expect evening lane and ramp closures on southbound I-5 at Roanoke and Mercer streets starting at 9 p.m. until the end of the show.

And finally, News Partner Patty from the Roosevelt Neighborhood Blog "Roosiehood" has a tip about a tiny, unknown (until now!) park with a great view of Lake Union.
