How tragic. NE175th street gets heavy traffic going to and coming from the freeway, it's one of our major E-W arterials. It's sad that the infrastructure on the surrounding streets (few sidewalks, limited streetlights) is that poor, due to years of neglect and indifference on the part of the city council, that people need to ride a mobility scooter on a major arterial.
ReplyDeleteI believe this was magic mike, the magician who used to perform downtown at the space Needle. Very sad! I used to live right across the street in the apartments.
DeleteThis roadway has great sidewalks and the ADA "Ramps" at every corner. I'm not sure why he would've been in the roadway. Very sad that this hapoened
DeleteWe can actually have it all. We can build quality sidewalks while we retain traffic capacity. Unfortunately, what's going to happen instead is that the present City Council and Mayor are almost certain to use this incident of a person riding a mobility scooter in traffic to punish the whole community with yet another road diet.
ReplyDeleteWe must speak honestly. This accident was not the motorist's fault. Even with the road reconfigured for two lanes instead of four, the deceased would have suffered the same outcome.
Unfortunately I think this was the individual that would ride his scooter all over the road. Called 911 a month or two ago about him riding his scooter in the middle of 10th Ave NE and 175th. Don't think the police responded to the situation unfortunately.
ReplyDelete“The sidewalks at this location are in very good condition.
ReplyDeleteAnyone of us could have hit him. At 7:00 PM it is dark. Mobility scooters are not fit for roadway driving in the dark. Most do not even have any lights because they are not meant to be driven in the road after dark for a reason.
ReplyDeleteI walk along 175th from North City to the Shoreline Library. Sidewalks feel safe especially when there is a bike lane (not on 175th) and a 3-foot planting strip.
ReplyDeleteAfter finishing up at the Library, I walk west along 175th to 99. This is where it gets dangerous - the l-5 intersections - then gets better to Meridian Ave. Meridian School has a great sidewalk until it stops and the sidewalk turns into a tightrope. The next two blocks are where I start thinking about my epitaph. I also think about the speed limit between 99 and 15th ave/North City - there are 8 traffic lights along this stretch. It would be much safer for all if the speed limit was 25 MPH. Eastbound traffic coming down the hill to Meridian School is traveling upwards to 45 MPH.
As a walker, I see cars speeding to the next traffic light and then stopping. This happens again and again (8 intersections with traffic light). Let's make the City of Shoreline safer for all - cars, bikes, walkers - reduce the speed limit and install a few cameras. The City of Lake Forest Park installed a camera on 178th and it works like magic. Come on Shoreline, we have 2 Link Stations, let's encourage those who want to walk and bike and get around without using a car. Lower the speed limit, install cameras (especially on 15th Ave NE through North City), and widen the sidewalks that lead to schools, library, shopping areas, and parks. We are getting there, but we still have a long ways to go.
I’m confused. Are you concerned that a car will hit you whilst you’re on the sidewalk? If so, none of your suggestions are going to help. And there are far safer routes to the light rail than 15th Ave NE and 175th.
DeleteI am not opposed to camera, by any means, but not the red light, ticket in the mail, California stop garbage. If there a hand full of people who can honestly say they have not sped up a couple miles an hour to insure they make the light. While running late to work, doctors or to pick up your kids. Or come to a 4 way stop, let's say later in the evening, no cars on the road and at a 4-way stop did not come to a complete stop, I would be shocked.
