Roger is lost

Roger is an 11 year old, reddish blond cocker spaniel. He walks with a slight limp and has a white mark on his cheek.

He slipped out, unnoticed, through the garage door around 5pm on Monday, May 28, from his home in Shorewood Hills II across from Shoreview Park on Innis Arden Way in Shoreline.

There's a possibility that someone may have "rescued" him. The owner was told that Roger was in a car with someone who was looking for his owners.

Mind and Body - A Dance Immersion experience

The Seattle Dance Project has a significant footprint in Shoreline, having spent an entire year teaching dance to students at Parkwood Elementary School. This event is for grownups.

Building upon five seasons of critically acclaimed performance and community outreach, Seattle Dance Project today announced that it will host its first intensive workshop for dancers at Seattle’s Fremont Studios from June 21 – 24, 2012.

Led by Seattle Dance Project principals Alexandra Dickson and Betsy Cooper, along with other experts, the unique, four-day experience includes exploration of dance forms, conditioning and mind/body development.

Sessions will include ballet, modern dance, pointe, dance repertoire, building dance longevity, yoga and pilates for dancers, and more. Both Dickson and Cooper are experienced professional dancers, committed to both excellence and compassion in their instruction and to helping dancers meet and exceed their personal goals.

“There are a wide variety of workshops for dancers, but we believe this will be like no other event,” said Tim Lynch, Seattle Dance Project artistic director. “Participants will share in an exciting, nurturing environment that allows them to discover more self-expression, self-fulfillment and passion for dance, while also challenging them to grow in technique, skill and physical development. We’re focusing on both the body and the mind.”

Participants must be 18 or older and have a minimum of three years of dance training. Sessions run from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. daily. Drop-in classes and private coaching sessions are available. All sessions will be held at the Dance Fremont studio at 4015 Stone Way North in Seattle.

Prices range from $350 for the entire four-day experience, to $75 for private coaching sessions, to $20 for drop-in classes.

Seattle Dance Project was founded in 2007 and is now led by artistic director Timothy Lynch. The company seeks to use the technical prowess and professional maturity of its dancers to continually push the limits of contemporary dance. Reflecting Seattle Dance Project’s commitment to high quality performing arts, all company members are active teachers in the Seattle dance community. King County Council Chair Larry Gossett endorses initiative to Legalize, Tax, and Regulate Marijuana

Gossett Cites Racial Disparities in Enforcement of Marijuana Laws

On Monday, May 28, King County Council Chair Larry Gossett announced his endorsement of Initiative 502, a Washington state initiative to legalize, tax, and regulate purchase and possession of small amounts of marijuana for adults 21 and over.

“As a nation, we can no longer afford to ignore the reality that the criminalization of marijuana has been a costly failure,” Gossett said. “The State of Washington should take the lead in establishing a new, public health approach that will better serve our communities.”

Last month, the Washington State Office of Financial Management published preliminary fiscal analyses of the new tax revenue Initiative 502 would generate. An estimated $560 million would go each year to the state general fund, local budgets, health care, drug abuse prevention, research, and education.

Gossett also expressed concern about current racial disparities in marijuana law enforcement. “The uncomfortable truth is that people with brown and black skin are more likely than their white counterparts to wind up with a marijuana conviction that will limit their educational and employment opportunities,” he said.

In Washington, an African American is three times as likely to be arrested, three times as likely to be charged, and three times as likely to be convicted of a marijuana offense than a white person despite the fact that white Washingtonians use marijuana at slightly higher rates. “These inequalities also exacerbate tensions between our police officers and the communities they serve,” Gossett added.

Gossett is serving his seventh term on the Metropolitan King County Council. Born and raised in Seattle, he has long been an advocate for programs that help inner-city youth and reduce racial and class disparities in our local criminal justice system. From April 1979 until December 1993, he served as executive director of the Central Area Motivation Program, one of the oldest and largest community action agencies in the City of Seattle.

In addition to the awards above, Davis Law Group has announced that Alex Ramsey and Elliot Fisher, creators of the "Texting While Driving: What are your Odds?" video, are the high school division winners of the 2012 Viral Video Scholarship Contest.

Alex and Elliot's video, which garnered almost 600 likes on Facebook, was viewed over 2,000 times on Vimeo and was the most viewed video on the dlglawfim.com website, creatively illustrates the odds of certain events occurring in a person"s lifetime, one of which being a car accident that is caused by cell phone use.

"We decided on texting while driving because it is an increasingly pertinent issue for our generation," Ramsey and Fisher said. "While drinking and driving and other safety issues are always good for the public to keep in mind, texting while driving is an issue that needs more attention."

The duo enlisted the help of several classmates to appear in the video, which features images of teens up-close as the odds of a particular event appear on the screen. Ramsey and Fisher have since created a small video and photo production company, called Sunderside Studios.

"Video has been a large part of our lives since 2007, and will continue to be," they added.
The award will help Elliot pay for his University of Washington tuition as he begins to work toward a degree in bioengineering. Alex is still a junior at Shorecrest High School, and he hopes to pursue a degree in business and study abroad after high school.

In 2010 Jan and Ron Hansen took a trip to Europe and visited the battlefields and cemeteries of World War II.

Jan said, "The folks in Luxembourg still remember the liberating forces and the kindnesses that were given above and beyond the military orders. Individuals still talk of the treats that touched the starving tummies of the children. We Americans today are still thanked for the gifts of yesterday. On this frozen field we were strangely warmed."

More aerospace job training, housing, and counseling services for veterans proposed by Constantine and Ferguson

One-time funds from Veterans and Human Services Levy could help returning veterans and families with transition to civilian life, and support regional homelessness effort

An innovative aerospace employment training initiative, more trauma and family counseling, and new investments in housing and homelessness would be funded with $6.7 million from the voter-approved Veterans and Human Services Levy, under a proposal from King County Executive Dow Constantine and Councilmember Bob Ferguson.

“On this Memorial Day weekend, we can reaffirm our commitment to our returning veterans by resolving to create the jobs, housing, and services they need to transition home safely and resume their place in our communities,” said Executive Constantine.

“King County voters should feel proud this Memorial Day knowing they help our local veterans find jobs, counseling, and housing in our community,” said Councilmember Ferguson, author and prime sponsor of the Veterans and Human Services Levy. “Veterans can face serious challenges when they return home, and these important investments provide the assistance and support our veterans deserve.”

Savings over the life of the 2006-2011 Veterans and Human Services Levy have created $6.7 million in one-time funds. The funds will be distributed over the next two years through a supplemental appropriation ordinance that the Executive is expected to transmit to the County Council next week and through the upcoming 2013-2014 biennial budget.

The proposal seeks to address three of the biggest struggles faced by local veterans: unemployment, mental health issues, and homelessness. Highlights of the funding proposal will include:

$2 million for a new Aerospace and Veteran Employment Training Initiative – Levy funding will support a new initiative as part of the King County Aerospace Alliance to help skilled veterans and others train for jobs in the burgeoning aerospace industry.This two-year program, proposed to begin this September at WorkSource Renton, would help veterans transfer the skills they learned in the military to aerospace industry jobs. It would offer direct training, personalized career assessment, job coaching and financial assistance, as well as potential paid internships.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the unemployment rate for veterans who served on active duty over the past 10 years was 12.1 percent, significantly higher than the overall unemployment rate of 8.1 percent.

$550,000 for increased Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) treatment and military family counseling – Levy funds currently support a successful partnership with the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs to provide PTSD treatment and counseling. The counseling has reduced symptoms in 95 percent of the veterans served. The additional funding would increase PTSD treatment hours for individuals and families. Funds would also accelerate the launch of a new program one year early to provide vital support to military families before, during, and after the deployment of their loved one.

Of those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, over 90 percent have been exposed to traumatic, combat-related situations. These experiences correlate to high rates of mental illness; about 20 percent of recently returning military service members report symptoms of mental health disorders, including PTSD and depression.

$2.3 million for veterans housing capital and services – The plan would invest significantly in housing capital and services in conjunction with the Five Year Plan to End Homelessness Among Veterans, a federal initiative to strengthen programs that prevent and end homelessness among veterans. The funding could also be used to make modifications to homes to accommodate disabled veterans.

According to the U.S. Census, approximately one in three of the adult homeless population has served in the military. An estimated 144,842 Veterans spent at least one night in an emergency shelter or transitional housing program in one recent year. Moreover, the prevalent rate of unemployment and lack of job opportunities creates increased housing instability for returning veterans.

The balance of $1.85 million in the proposal would fund services and programs for veterans and others in need, including enhanced outreach to women veterans and veterans of color; additional job training and public health services for veterans, and investments to address youth homelessness.

King County voters originally approved the Veterans and Human Services Levy in 2005, and overwhelmingly renewed the levy last August with a nearly 70 percent approval. Half of the levy revenue is dedicated to serving veterans, military personnel, and their families, and half is for other individuals and families in need.

Meet the Chief and learn about resources for public safety

On Tuesday, June 12, 7 pm at City Hall Council Chambers, the City of Shoreline will host a community meeting on public safety.

It will be an opportunity for residents to meet the new Chief of Police Shawn Ledford, gain insight into some of the recent crimes that have occurred in Shoreline, and learn about some of the different crime prevention programs offered by the Shoreline Police Department.

There will also be an opportunity to learn more about many of the different resources available to individuals that are victims of domestic violence and other crimes.

Shorecrest senior Kathryn Andria-Habermann placed eighth in the State 3A girls’ 400 meters Saturday at the State track and field championships at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

Andria-Habermann ran the 400 in 60.04 seconds, behind the winning time of 55.18 by Ellie Heiden of Kamiakin.

Family-friendly event will include fun and educational activities for all ages

14th annual Bastyr University Herb and Food Fair puts the focus on global health this year with the theme "Restoration of Body and Planet."

The free community event, which is part of the Seattle Science Festival of events, will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 2, 2012 and is expected to bring several thousand visitors to Bastyr University's 51-acre campus near the shores of Lake Washington.

Keynote Speakers

Paul Stamets is an internationally renowned mycologist, author and speaker. He is the sole source supplier and co-investigator of the first two medicinal mushroom clinical studies in the United States funded by National Institutes of Health. His books, Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World, Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms, and The Mushroom Cultivator, are used as textbooks around the world by the specialty and medicinal mushroom industries. Stamets is also an advisor to the Program of Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona Medical School, serves on the International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms editorial board, and was appointed to the board of the U.S. Pharmacopoeia.

Jean Layton, ND, aka "the Gluten-Free Doctor," uses her analytical skills as a chef, doctor and author to address the challenge that "there has to be a better way." One way she fulfills that goal is through education: teaching baking and detox classes, and helping food companies understand how to keep gluten-free people safe. Dr. Layton has a naturopathic medicine practice Bellingham, Washington, and has co-authored the book Gluten-Free Baking for Dummies. Her talk is titled "Eliminate the Negatives: Clean out Your World and Thrive."

Heidi Bohan is an educator specializing in native plants and their uses, with a focus on Northwest Coast traditional knowledge and ethnobotany, traditional foods, medicinal plants, basketry, carving and weaving. She also designs and assists with native plant habitat gardens and restoration projects. She is the author of The People of Cascadia, Journey Plant Medicine Cards and the Starflower Native Plant ID Cards. She works as a full-time educator and consultant for the Snoqualmie Tribe, as well as Northwest Indian College, Bastyr University and her own "Gatherer to Gardener" programs.

Sacred Seeds Sanctuary Project

This year’s Herb and Food Fair is also where a new garden project will have its official kickoff. Bastyr University is honored to have been selected as the Pacific Northwest representative of the Sacred Seeds Sanctuary, an international effort to cultivate native plants, encourage seed saving and retain local ethnobotanical knowledge. We are the only sanctuary on the entire west coast and will be working closely with community representatives and local tribes to create a communal space in which to share the uses and importance of native plants.

Transportation and Parking

Attendees can park for free at the Kenmore Park and Ride (at 7346 N.E. Bothell Way) and take a free Bastyr shuttle directly to the event. The bus runs every 15 minutes from 9:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Very limited parking will be available on campus for a $5 fee. Bastyr University is located at 14500 Juanita Drive N.E., Kenmore, adjacent to St. Edward State Park. No event parking is permitted at St. Edward State Park.

While the fair is free, donations are always welcome. Proceeds from the Herb and Food Fair benefit Bastyr University students by contributing to the University's garden improvements and providing funding to purchase supplies for its herb- and food-cultivating classes.

Dublin Dollars, the community group which raised funds to support the Shorecrest High School recent trip to Ireland, was among those honored by the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) at its Community Recognition Awards luncheon held May 18 at the Puget Sound Educational Service District in Renton.

Each year, WASA 110, which includes Shoreline, holds a luncheon and an awards ceremony to honor community leaders nominated by their respective districts.

Representing Dublin Dollars at the event were Mary Grassley, Barb Swan and Peter Hughes, accompanied by Superintendent Sue Walker and Shorecrest Principal Pat Hegarty.

Dublin Dollars raised more than $44,000 to support the trip by the Shorecrest marching band, pipers. Flags and Highland Dancers to Dublin to participate in the St. Patrick's Day parade and tour sites in Ireland.

The Dublin Dollars nomination read as follows:

"The "Dublin Dollars" fundraising group was an immense help in making the Ireland tour a reality. From June 2011 through February 2012 the volunteers of this organization provided numerous opportunities for Shorecrest students to earn money for their trip.

"This group of parents and community members graciously gave of themselves so that our students could have the opportunity of a lifetime. In nine months they raised in excess of $44,000. They kept up a Web site, Facebook page as well as a Google group to promote their efforts. They also were sensitive to families having difficulties and reached out to several to get them help with the cost of the trip. Some of the parents made personal and gift matching contributions to allow scholarships to be offered, beyond the usual fundraising efforts for the entire group.

"The experience for Shorecrest students has been immeasurable. The 135 Shorecrest students, accompanied by 30 staff and parents, spent 10 days in Ireland performing, touring, and bonding. While the trip was a musical success, it was also a deep cultural learning experience as well. They visited Dublin, Limerick, Killarney, Cobh, Dingle, Athlone, Galway, and points in between. They had the chance to meet and interact with Irish high school students and to share a performance with a community youth band from Athlone."

Shoreline Deputy Superintendent Marcia Harris was also honored at the luncheon. She will retire August 31 after 37 years overall in public education.

Garbage pick up on schedule for Monday

For the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 28, 2012, Republic Services will collect garbage, recycling and yard waste/food scraps for its customers in the Puget Sound area on the regular schedule. Customers whose normal collection day is Monday should plan to put their carts out as usual for the regular pick-up time. The office will be closed, however, including Customer Service.

CleanScapes said basically the same thing - pickups will be made as usual for Monday. (Editor: I forgot to ask, but suspect that office staff will be home for the day).

Shorecrest fifth in State 3A girls’ 4x200-meter relay

The Shorecrest team of Kathryn Andria-Habermann, Nicole Harris, Sarah Beland and Amanda Banks finished fifth in the State 3A girls’ 4x200-meter relay Saturday at the State track and field meet at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

Shorecrest had a time of 1:44.32 to finish behind Kamiakin, which won in 1:41.2; Nathan Hale; Mount Spokane; and Bainbridge.

Nicole Harris of Shorecrest placed second in the State 3A girls’ 300-meter hurdles Saturday at the State track and field championships at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

Harris had a time of 44.42 seconds, behind the 43.48 of winner Cecelia Jackson of Holy Names.

There’s a lot of interest throughout the region on the future Link light rail station at Northgate, as well as the vision for transit-oriented development in the surrounding area.

Sound Transit staff on Thursday presented the Board with updated options to consider as part of the integrated access plans for the station. Kevin Desmond, general manager of King County Metro, also outlined Metro’s Northgate objectives, including future transit-oriented development potentials.

Northgate is already a very busy transit center with about 1,500 park-and-ride spaces and around 5,000 bus boardings a day. It will be considerably busier in 2021, when Link trains begin service. By 2030, we expect to have 15,000 light rail boardings there a day.

We’re looking at a number of options for dealing with parking during construction of the Link station and then when trains are running. One option is a potential 600-900-stall shared use parking garage to replace about 430 park-and-ride stalls and 450 Northgate Mall parking stalls that would be displaced during six years of construction.

Other options we were asked to explore included shared parking opportunities on the west side of I-5 with a possible pedestrian bridge.

The garage option has the potential of converting seven acres of surface parking lots into a structure that takes up one acre, leaving about six acres free for redevelopment by King County. Overall, there would be no net increase in transit parking.

We’re planning to break ground on the 4.3-mile North Link extension from the University of Washington to Northgate in August. A Northgate construction update public meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Olympic View Elementary School cafeteria, 504 NE 95th Street, Seattle.

Editor's note: The Lynnwood Link, which will run from Northgate to Lynnwood, is currently in the planning stages.

The Lake Forest Park Environmental Quality Commission and the Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation are sponsoring a free and open to anyone workshop on how to maintain backyard streams.

The workshops will help streamside landowners understand how they can minimize damage to their own property, avoid damaging their neighbors’ property, and help the region’s efforts to restore salmon.

The workshops will start with information on stream ecology and watershed science, and progress to improved landscaping and streambank protection techniques.

People with streambank property are especially welcome to attend, and all others with an interest in healthy streams are also invited. People from neighboring cities are more than welcome to attend.

The same workshop will be presented twice:

Thursday May 31 from 7 – 9 pm
Saturday June 9 from 10 am to noon

A field trip is planned for Saturday June 9 from 1 to 3 pm for participants from both workshop sessions.

The workshops will be held in the Council Chambers at the Lake Forest Park City Hall, and the field trip will depart from City Hall.

The workshops will be taught by Tom Murdoch, Executive Director of Adopt-A-Stream Foundation. Tom is one of the founders of Adopt-A-Stream; he has decades of experience in developing concepts and techniques for stream restoration. He also has extensive teaching experience in aquatic ecology, and vast experience coordinating volunteer stream enhancement workers.

Bartell Drugs partners with Food Lifeline for "Bartell's Community Food Drive" beginning May 28

Bartell Drugs' tradition of helping to fight hunger in the Puget Sound area continues with the 2012 launch of "Bartell's Community Food Drive," a new community partnership with Food Lifeline.

Scheduled for May 28 to June 10, "Bartell's Community Food Drive" focuses on replenishing local food banks in the summer months when families that normally depend on free or reduced-price school meals may struggle to provide healthy meals at home.

Some food item suggestions include tuna, instant oatmeal, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, cheese crackers, applesauce and canned fruit.

Other suggested items include baby formula, diapers, baby food (boxes or plastic tubs only) and personal care items such as toothpaste, tooth brushes, tissues, shampoo and conditioner, soap and feminine hygiene products.

Throughout the two-week drive, all 58 Bartell Drugs locations in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties will be accepting non-perishable food and other suggested donation items. Since 2009, Bartell Drugs' leadership role in summer food drives has generated over 60,000 pounds of food for local food banks.

"For many families, dealing with food hardship is an ongoing challenge, and the need becomes more acute during the summer months when children are at home," said Bartell Drugs Chairman & CEO George D. Bartell. "With the support of our customers, we hope to fill a very important need in the communities we serve."

According to "Map the Meal Gap-Child Food Insecurity 2011," a recent study conducted by Feed America, 23% of children are at risk of hunger in Washington State. Many are unsure of the source of their next meal.

Seattle-based Bartell Drugs owns and operates 58 stores throughout King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. Family-owned since 1890, it is the oldest family-owned drugstore chain in the United States.

Free wheelchair ramp gives Shoreline woman independence

Jan Lunak’s Multiple Sclerosis will no longer prevent her from entering and leaving her home, thanks to the free wheelchair ramp that was built by volunteers from Irons Brothers Construction and Home Depot, as part of the Master Builders Care Foundation’s 19th Annual Rampathon event.

On Saturday, May 19, 2012, a team of over 20 volunteers from Irons Brothers Construction and the Home Depot Foundation came together to change a family's life and home.

As part of the Master Builder's Care Foundation, one of 15 ramps was built in Shoreline for the Lunak family. Jan Lunak had been unable to leave her home without assistance from family or friends. Now, using her motorized scooter, she has regained mobility and can use the new wheel chair ramp to leave her home independently and enjoy the outdoors on her own.

Joseph Irons and his company have been building ramps for the Rampathon program since 2006 and continue to do so as their personal and company mission is to give back to the communities where they live and work.

The recipient, Jan Lunak, beams with gratitude for the volunteers and her new ramp, "I am so humbled by all of this, it makes me realize there is goodness, everywhere."

Volunteers from the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties built 14 free wheelchair ramps for low-income disabled homeowners during the Rampathon event. Since 1993, teams from the Master uilders Association have constructed 320 wheelchair ramps.

Carter Osborne of Shorecrest finishes seventh in State 3A boys’ 800 meters

Shorecrest junior Carter Osborne placed seventh in the State 3A boys’ 800-meter run Saturday at the State track and field meet at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

Osborne ran the 800 meters in 1:55.57, and placed 13th in the 1600 meters in 4:25.26.

Izaic Yorks of Lakes set State records of 1:50.56 and 4:04.77 in winning the two events.
