About 40 people gathered Monday night at the entrance to Hamlin Park to protest the City's proposal to carve a 4.5 acre maintenance facility out of the the 15th NE side of the park.

Participants expressed opinions about the City not listening to citizens. Their concern is that the City might cut down 3.5 acres of towering trees in a park to make space for trucks. They feel it is shortsighted to eliminate parkland and trees when the city is heading toward greatly increased density because of the station area zoning.

There is currently a 1 acre truck parking lot on the site.
The City Council did a quick drive thru of two other proposed locations, then settled in for dinner in the maintenance yard and a presentation on the details of building in the park. After, they headed back to City Hall for the regular council meeting at 7pm.
Shoreline is a "Tree City USA"!!??!! What a joke. Hamlin is clearly the preferred site for staff convenience and an unwillingness to work with North City Water District. There are alternatives, but our city government would rather remove over 3 acres of beautiful mature forested parkland for a parking lot. The city has no shame.
ReplyDeleteWhy don't they combine it with the new North City Water land purchase? Seems like a good location for both and there is a lot of land there.

What a shame to carve out part of this Jewel of a Park for truck and gravel storage. The promise of smaller pocket parks is not a fair trade off. It is the size of this park that allows one to enjoy some solitude even when the park is being heavily used.

ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what further action is planned to try and stop this? I think we need to do what we can. If anyone is out there planning other actions please let us know.

ReplyDeleteI think this is a terrible place for the city to put additional maintenance equipment. They should find somewhere else. They should not be removing acres of trees out of Hamlin park. We don't have much left of our urban forests. City of Shoreline currently requires private homeowners to replace trees removed on their own property by a lot more than 1 to 1. They aren't following their own city vision or setting a good example. With all the other sustainable environmental things the city has been implementing, this is very hypocritical. I trail run in this park regularly. I'd be heart broken to see this happen. I think it's likely that most users of this park do not know this is being proposed. I just found out myself very randomly and I live close to it and am a frequent user.

They want to cut down existing trees and plant more on my street? Sounds like they should cut taxes instead. I'll plant trees on my property, and you can just leave Hamlin alone!
