CleanScapes to award $10,000 prize to neighborhood producing the least waste

Friday, February 24, 2012

Correction: Wednesday is in last place! Updated 2-24-2012 4:57pm

On April 21st at Shoreline’s Earth Day Every Day event, CleanScapes will announce the winning neighborhoods for this year’s $10,000 community project. The winning collection day area will have reduced their waste more than the other collection areas.

Thursday is leading the way. Wednesday is last.

The Thursday collection area is leading this year’s competition, while all other collection areas have actually shown increases in waste (though the margins are slim!). The Thursday area includes all of Richmond Beach and Innis Arden, as well as parts of Hillwood, Richmond Highlands, and Highland Terrace (online map here).

Last year, the Friday collection area won the competition, and since then, CleanScapes and the City of Shoreline have been working with a committee of community members on the selection, design, and installation of two projects chosen by the committee:

  1. Quarter-mile markers along the Interurban Trail, designed by local artists and installed by the Shoreline Parks Department.
  2. An amenity (TBD) at the recently approved community garden at Twin Ponds Park, currently in design phase.

Aldan Shank of CleanScapes says, "Both of these are exciting projects and we are looking forward to seeing what this year’s winning neighborhood chooses for its own $10,000 community improvement project(s)."
CleanScapes staff will speak with neighborhood associations or PTAs about the Neighborhood Rewards Program. Contact Aldan Shank, Waste Diversion Project Manager, to schedule a speaker.
