Two free throws with 4 seconds left clinch Shorewood victory

Two free throws by Shorewood forward Masha Shtikel with four seconds on the clock gave the Thunderbird girls a 44-43 home victory over Everett Tuesday as Thunderbird girls prepare for Thursday game at division-leading Glacier Peak.

Shorewood takes a 4-1 Western Conference 3A record (4-4 overall) into a Thursday game at division-leading Glacier Peak (5-0, 5-1).

The Thunderbirds had come into the week with a 69-37 victory over Marysville-Getchelll Friday.

In the Tuesday victory over Everett, Shorewood trailed by one point with four seconds left in the game, when Shtikel was fouled on a shot attempt, drawing two free throws.

She made both shots.

Shorewood trailed 7-6 after the first quarter, took a 20-19 halftime lead and fell behind 28-27 after three quarters.

Jennifer Franklin led Shorewood with 15 points. Shtikel scored 10.

The Shorewood junior varsity defeated Everett, 44-42.

Shorewood and Glacier Peak play at 7:15 p.m. at Glacier Peak High School, with the junior varsity and “C” games both at 5:40.

In Shorewood's 69-37 victory at Marysville-Getchell, Shorewood led 14-8 after the first quarter, 38-21 at halftime and 52-25 after three quarters. Shtikel led Shorewood with 15 points; Georgia Allfrey scored 12; Christine McCauley had 10; and Lauren Thompson added 9. The Shorewood junior varsity team defeated Marysville Getchell, 49-37. The Thunderbird “C” team lost, 20-13.

For the season, Shtikel leads the T-birds in scoring with 122 points in 8 games for an average of 15.3 points per game.
