It was a nailbiter Thursday night, September 23, for high school girls’ soccer, when Shorecrest Varsity (pictured right at a Sept 7 game) went into overtime and then a shootout against Everett at Everett Memorial Stadium. The game was tied 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes, and the teams held each other off for two 5-minute overtimes before lining up for the shootout. With players from each team scoring consecutively, it wasn’t until the final shot that the game was decided with Everett up by one. Shorecrest’s lone game goal was made by senior Nicole Harris. Shorecrest Girls’ Varsity Wesco 3A record now stands at 4 wins, 1 loss.

Entering this third week of season play, the Shorecrest team had four wins. In the season-opener against Oak Harbor, Shorecrest Senior Rachel Schrote snuck in a goal just before halftime, and it was enough to carry the Scots to a win 1-0 on September 9, on Whidbey Island. Two days later, Sophomore Sophia Flohr's goal in the 60th minute broke a scoreless tie as Shorecrest defeated Meadowdale 1-0 in the September 11th game at Shoreline Stadium. It was a big win for a young Shorecrest club coming together as a team.

With five Seniors, six Juniors, four Sophomores and four Freshman on the team, the Scots Varsity girls have worked hard for each victory. In their second week of play, Rachel Schrote again put in the one goal for the win 1-0 over Lynnwood. On September 16th, a goal in the first minute by Rachel Schrote added to two more by Senior Christina Jarvis and Freshman Maya Garber-Yonts to bring their 4th conference game win 3-1 over Mountlake Terrace. Shorecrest’s wins have been aided by strong defense, and solid goalie performances of Senior Chelsey Doyle, Sophomore Ashley Beason and Freshman Frida Swenson. The Scots Varsity girls are coached by Mindy Dalziel.

The Shorecrest Girls’ Junior Varsity team, coached by Drew Thompson, has had a solid start to the season as well, with three shutouts and two losses in conference play. The JV team has scored strongly against its opponents, led by high-scoring Junior Corrina Smith with 5 goals, seconded by Freshman Anisa Gomez with four goals. Other goals have been contributed by Junior Natalie Smith (3 goals), Freshman Erin Anderson (2 goals), Sophomore Leah Davis (2 goals), Junior Allison Ezeonwu (2 goals), Sophomore Annie Schlachter (2 goals) and Freshmen Anika Josund and Cali Gorney each with one goal. The JV team is anchored by goalie Willa Lerner with assistance from Frida Swenson.

The Shorecrest girls face off with their crosstown rivals, Shorewood, on Saturday the 25th at Shoreline Stadium. Shorewood Varsity is also coming into the game with four conference wins, including a 1-0 victory over Everett on Tuesday.

Home games are played at Shoreline Stadium, and the JV team usually plays at 5 pm with the Varsity game beginning at 7 pm. The schedule for upcoming games is available here.
